The New Zealand Trials have just completed. Congratulations to BBO members Cascade (Wayne Burrows) and Kermit (Pam Livingston) who are in the Open team going to the PABF in Indonesia, KiwiFraser (Fraser Rew) and John Whyte in the Youth team to the same venue, alanz (Alan Grant) and Ant (Anthony Ker) who are off to the Bermuda Bowl in China and all others selected after an arduous five day trial over Easter.

We were lucky making a place on the team by 0.5 VPs. Which was an excellent come back. The trials were a double round-robin of IMP scored pairs against a datum. For the entire first round robin we were trailing the field. However we made a good recovery in the second round robin and made the team for the PABF tournament.
The selectors have left one place open for the Bermuda Bowl team to be filled after the PABF. Realistically we are only an outside chance for Shanghai with both of the other pairs I am sure having a better chance than us.

May I inquire why NZ picks teams via pairs VP per USA of 40 years ago and not set teams in a head to head playoff?

By this method they stand a better chance for their three best pairs to qualify. Set teams improves the chances for a sponsor to qualify. Pairs trials normally makes it impossible for a sponsor to qualify, unless (s)he's actually one of the better players.
In Norway we don't have trials, a selection committee picks the team. The appointed team has to be approved by the board of the federation.

For years NZ has had teams trials and sent teams overseas with high hopes only to see them fail. Last year they tried a pairs trial for the PABF and look what happened. The Open team with Wayne and Pam making their debut finished a very close 4th and the Women had a handsome victory, their first in decades!
I think most players are happy with that and to see pairs trials again this year. I hope they continue as now my partner is finally old enough, we intend to have a crack at the Senior trials next year.
