in some cases it might be interesting to know whether we play imps, mps, rubber etc. and of course the vulnerability.
i think i would pass at mps as it is here: first i dbl then i pass. p knows that i may have no convenient bid without 4 h so must be prepared for a pass. give him a typical hand: xx,KQxx,xxxx,KJx. opps will make 5s, 1h and 2ruffs (we lead trumps of course!)...

at imps or rubber it is more difficult. maybe a guess but 4c seems to be on the safe side. p knows i dont have 4h so i must have some d length or i am very strong.

1. Double and I think its pretty clear.

2. Yummy....I think I'll pass. If pard has his bid, they aren't making this.

I was a bit surprised to get a dead zero on this one.

X and pass both seem automatic.

well, old texas buddy had, 2=3=4=4 with aces of spades and Q of H and Q of C. I was surprised we got a zero on this bidding.

If they make a doubled partscore you shouldn't be too surprised to get a zero

Because nobody else doubles 3S with 6 points and 2344?

Just out of question, what sort of strength and shape do people expect for the double of 3?

My inability to come up with a really good answer to this question is part of the reason I don't play responsive doubles in this auction, but I'm curious what people expect.

Knowing that I have 2 spades, 2344 would be typical. 2335 and 2353 are all possible as well. 2443 or 2434 are possible too in hands that don't want to play the moysian (correcting 4m to 4H would imply 4 hearts and somewhere else to play). This could be risky as partner may try bidding 5 of a minor though with 4H and 5m and a strong hand.

If I didn't know I had 2 spades then 33(34) and 3244 all come into play.

Is one spade a possibility? If not, would it be fair to say that the initial doubler is expected to pass in this auction unless holding a singleton spade? After all, if "they" have a nine-card fit and "we" have an eight-card fit (and most of the example hands don't strongly suggest that we have more than an eight-card fit) LOTT would suggest that bidding at the four-level is usually wrong (17 total tricks).

Yes, I would say with this shape pass is the default action from opener. Having 1 spade would be unusual.

AWM, glad you brought this point up. This partnership is discussing if we need 14 hcp most of the time to make this double. I note in the forum 13 hcp seems to be quite the norm as do others I have emailed this problem to.

btw Arend, pard had 8 hcp if that makes a difference.

I would X with this shape and 11 points quite often. It is essential to get in. Rodwell (at imps) had 4333 with 4 spades to the AT and a 12 count and Xed 1S at the nationals. I was really surprised by this (I did not make the same X), but I lost 6 imps on a double partscore hand so what do I know? :)

I'll stick to my beginner bids :)
