This thread is a good read:

One powerful impression from this match was of playing against Helgemo and Helness. These two guys don’t seem to have any regard for the delicacy that pervades modern bidding. Their whole style is to bid 1N – 3N or 1H – 3H; 4H on as many hands as possible. And in the play, their natural flair and concealed information comes out. I am finding it hard to describe the feeling, but playing these Norwegians, one of the world’s best pairs, is a strange experience..

So the time to switch to anti-conventions is here...

I would think this is a reminder to everyone that conventions are just tools that should not be overused. Who said: "In any auction you will regret all your bids except the final one, and sometimes even that one :)".

I think however that it speaks for their class that they know so well when NOT to use Stayman more than any other pair. Yet having a tool and choosing not to use it is better than not having the tool at all.

A different conclusion is quite possible!
Considering their well known card playing skills, can we not perhaps blame their consistent also ran status on the lack of sophistication in bidding.
You must know the rules well - so that you may break them wisely!

Then we have (from Spring 07 NABC Bulletin 3):

Previously, Duboin and Welland had only been at the same table as opponents. They filled out a convention only shortly before the contest began.

Though perhaps it was a sophisticated last minute convention card.

Btw it does say "filled out a convention" and not "filled out a convention card".
