Scoring: MP

1 - p - p - DBL
p -1 -2 - 3
p - ???

This hand was north and responding to the balancing double, 1 seemed more than enough. What does the 3 bid show and what call would you make and why?

3D shows a big hand. I've got a strong hand in context, and it is very likely that I have a heart stopper. so 3NT it is.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I think 3 shows a good hand with primary s and 3 card support: AJx xx AKJxxx Kx would be all I'd need to bid that way....and, indeed, I might have less (or slightly more).

An intermediate hand (solid opening, good 6 card suit) would have reopened 3, even with 3s, so he has more than that... but I still wouldn't bid 3N.

While I probably have a stopper, probably is not definitely and we have to couple that with the caution that we probably do not have 8 winners even after we win that trick. I expect to make 3... and, if not, we get out for at most -1, while 3N will sometimes be down several tricks.

This is matchpoints, so the game bonus is not that important.

If this were imps, I'd bid 3N.

I'm NOT bidding 3 at any form of scoring.

I'd also bid 3N if we were in heat 1, where everything works.
