If members could be encouraged to fill in data such as
- which language they speak
- whch bidding systems the play

then these could be used for targetting lobby chat.

Does anyone on the forums actually have lobby chat turned on? :P

Probably not, but if you could restrict lobby chat to narrowly targeted chat (not sure how this should be defined, just a vague idea) it could be more attractive.

Dear ArcLight,

I just can't, can't resist the temptation to comment on your comment.

To begin with, there are billions of civilized people in this world who do not speak English. It's very likely that most of those stay out of BBO but your statement was pretty general.

Further, millions of civilized bridge players do not know SAYC. They are stuck with SAYC on BBO and so they try to learn basics, but again your statement is to a great degree derogatory.

I understand your concern as most likely you would only be able to provide ONE language and ONE bidding system. And I trust all civilized people would not hold it against you.

Sincerely,

zielona => means green => green in SAYC but still considers herself civilized....

Am surprised forum admins let ArcLight's comment stay here for that long. Not all civilized people understand emoticons.

PS2
I like your idea Helene. Perhaps could add a level for each bidding system as there are plenty "beginner" SAYC bidders here who otherwise are above that level.

Just to elleborate:
- People who only speak (say) Bulgarian could anounce in the lobby that they need a partner for the main room. Other Bulgarians could turn the Bulgarian lobby-chat channel on leaving the rest of the lobby silent. They would easier be able to find each other.

- Some tourneys are restricted by language (usually French). This filtering is ineffective as you find French-speaking people allover the World. And not all Swiss and Canadians speak French.

- Sometimes I find myself looking for people who can play Wei Precision. Maybe a lobby channel for Wei Precision would be helpful.

The best individuals are in my opinion the Polish ones. Less misunderstandings than in the general ones (where most will play SAYC and hope partner does too) since WJ2005 is so well-known and well-defined.´

Most people speak more than one language and most good players play more than one system. If I choose "Dutch" and "WJ2005" this is bound to be an uncommon combination.

With this combination I would not be allowed to play in German-only and SAYC-only tournaments? Sort of defies the point...

P.S. My BBO version is set to English even though that is not my native language. I just like it that way since computer programs feel right to me if they are in English
