Any other info available on this - was this a tourney or just mps for fun? Was their system standard, albeit with negative free bids, or something else? Was their opening notrump range 15-17, or something else? Was the "it is NF, 10+ hands start with double" said by responder, or by opener?

I am just too weak to act. Their 4-3 spade fit is probably not their best spot :unsure: And if we had game, partner would not have passed.

This is a very nasty situation. If the opponents have not totally stuffed up, partner probably has someting like 5 or 6 decent spades and a few points and is waiting for us to X. Are we good enough to X? Well that is the million dollar question. The 1D overcall was borderline to say the least. As it is MP I will X. Partner expects it, and anyway anyone who plays methods like these is not going to be much of a declarer.

P.S. How can I correct the header? I forgot "on". :unsure:

This is one of the easiest problems I have ever seen.

I call the director.

Partner was entitled to know that 1♠ was NF before he bid.

I cannot think of a reason that the director would not wind the auction back to 1♠ and then partner can make another call (or repeat the pass).

If he passes I too will pass.

Just because 1♠ is NF doesn't mean pard can take action over it. For instance, pard may have some 4=4=2=3 9 10 count.

We probably aren't buying the hand, but I'm not selling out to 1 measly ♠. I'm doubling.

I'm gonna pass regardless. I have a min for the overcall. If pard has spades, they're stitting in the wrong contract. If pard has no spades, they may make 10 tricks.

Maybe other tables are in 1NT or two spades. I am not convinced I won't make things worse by doubling.

The EBU is trying hard to educate players to call the Director in cases like this. The failure to alert (assuming this is the case) is misinformation (MI) and it is an area of the Laws that most players do not understand well.

I too do not know the rules, but I do know to call the Director :)

However if nothing changes then I'll pass (reluctantly).

I agree with the call for the Director: partner has to be protected here.... if there is no director, then ask for (insist upon) undo's back to partner... if they refuse, leave the table, politely of course... but the opps need to understand that this kind of failure to alert is potentially very damaging to partner.
