Suppose you play Obvious switch combined with suit preference in trick 2 and following.
Does this suit preference also apply when you return a suit?

You partner leads a low club for your Ace.
You now return a low diamond, eg D2.
(Your leads are 3/5th).
Is this D2 normally??:
- 3th/5th?
- promising something (3th/5th only on opening lead)
- suit preference for clubs?

Obviously, the meaning depends on agreement.

There are some fine players who would argue that one should switch to one's count card: often (for the players I have in mind) 3/5th.

Others, me included, argue that count is rarely important and that it can often be inferred anyway.... so we use attitude on our spot lead through declarer, when switching.

If I won the lead and returned a , that would be a count card. However, a switch to a new suit spot card would be attitude in that suit: and an high (discouraging) spot would be neutral as to other suit preferences.

I don't know anyone who plays that the spot led in the switch suit conveys specific 'other suit' preference implications: I am familiar only with count or attitude within the suit led.

BTW, I have never understood the fascination many defenders have with count signals. But that is another topic for another day.

Either 1/3/5 count or attitude (promising an honor), depending on your agreement with partner. I don't know which is more standard, but even if I knew, maybe partner knows a different standard, so better discuss it. :)
I prefer attitude personally.

No, in "os" except in some very rare cases where common bridge knowledge and exp. take hold the lead at trick two is not suit pref. But if your parnter does not play a forced card his play may be suit pref or if declarer is leading to trick two you or your partners follow to declarers lead may be suit pref. Does that make sense?

Of course you can play any complicated thing you want but that is not "os".

What mikeh said.
(Although we have had some strong disagreements about trick 1 signals we seem completely aligned on returns!)

There are some situations where the switch would be count, but they are rare and only when attitude is already known (or inferred in order to beat the contract) in obvious cashout situations.

As a slight side point, if the attitude is already known in a suit, I switch to my count card. This is the complement of if the count is already known, I lead an attitude card at trick 1.

I don't think Granovetter is specific on attitude or count on 3rd hand leading through declarer. A low diamond is definitely not suit preference however.

Low would imply - keep em coming, while high would mean - do something else.

Granovetter's suit preference deals with following to subsequent tricks (not leading a suit).

BTW, I have never understood the fascination many defenders have with count signals. But that is another topic for another day.

For me it is interesting to play count for the following 2 reasons:
- It learns me to count :P
- I play in a weaker field. So rather partner then opps will read the count. But maybe attitude is still more intersting then?

Why is count (eg 1/3/5) leading at trick one good and is attitude leading at trick 2 and following better?

I do think Attitude leads are better at NT contracts at trick one. That is what I play.
