I am going to reduce smoking step by step, oh dear it will be a hard fight!

My opponent (devil in me) has a huge carry over in this match!

I resolve the same thing I do nearly every year. I hope to exorcise more.

My mom died of lung cancer. Great job in making the decision to give up tobacco.

Here's mine:

1) No sugar or flour until I lose 17 #'s.
2) Get up every morning by 6:30 (even when I play IRL the night before)

Lets check back after January and see how everyone's doing. :)

It's doable, my last cigarette was December 31st 1996.

Now, if only I could overcome my Alcohol problem

Thanks for your support, Geoff :)

In the past several approaches to stop smoking (suddenly) failed,
so I am trying it now with a long term strategy, my goal is to reduce
consumption 10% every month.

My seven resolutions:

1. Continue to improve at bridge and work harder to be a better partner to Larry and to the nice talented pickups I've had recently.
1A. Continue to resist any urge to increase my ranking.
2. Lose some weight. Put down the dessert fork and eat some more salad.
3. Stay true to my conservative beliefs, even as screwed up as American politics has become.
4. Enjoy my home life more. It's becoming quite important to me.
5. Play more with my cats, Bugatti and Baci.
6. Try really, really hard to not be so difficult when driving.
7. Play to the best of my ability at the Spingold this summer, and enjoy the experience.

I hate new year resolutions. I've never managed to keep a single one.

Funny; I find myself drifting toward the left. On social issues anyway.

Good luck with that one. Fortunately, I'm just a political opportunist so I don't have anything to stay true to :-)

5. Play more with my cats, Bugatti and Baci.
That's a good one, I'll try to play more with my cats Pandora and Whoopy. Btw, if I ever get two male cats, maybe I'll call them Buratti and Lanzerotti.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

Admittedly, it does seem that my views might be in the spoken minority on here. It doesn't mean tho that it doesn't undergo self-examination from time to time.

My cat project is going well. Bugatti, the male, is quite attentive these days to the envy of Baci, the female. So I'm having to do shuttle diplomacy between the 2. lol :P

If I could find a Conservative that actually was a fiscal conservative and believer in small, fiscally sound government, I might agree with you.

Unfortunately, all I've seen actually in politics have either been primarily social conservatives (which, despite being a Christian, white, male, heterosexual and monogamous, and a child of an unwed mother when it wasn't cool, still disgusts me, especially when covered by a large coating of hypocrisy when inconvenient) or end up spending more (while taking in less) than the fiscal liberals.

Now, to be fair, most of that extra spending does end up going to corporations, the justice system and their corporate suppliers, and random pork barrel projects, so they do stay true to "people should be able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and don't need government handouts." Oh, did I mention that I'm cynical sometimes?

While I understand the fact that without the corporations, people like me wouldn't have a job - especially a good job - bit, corporations who believe that it's fair to take advantage of 90% reduced cost-of-living in [country] to improve their profits by lowering manufacturing costs, while calling my doing the same thing with the finished product unfair, "grey market", or piracy (and, after all, if you feel 50 cents is a fair price for a book in India, then it's a fair price. If 50 cents plus shipping is a fair price for me, then we have a deal. Right?) are playing games. Note, I am not talking about counterfeiting; I mean the real product from the real company, at the price they offer their real customers, who just happen to live elsewhere.

Until this gets solved, Keylime and I will just have to continue our approval of each other at the bridge table and avoid politics, as before. How did you survive in Hippy Valley BC, Keylime?

Oh, on topic? With everything going on in my life right now, I think being stable and happy at the end of the year will be good enough for me.

Michael.

I quit 2 years and 3 days ago cold turkey and I'll be happy to share my secret with you. I can't promise that it will work this well for you but I have not once in these two years been tempted to have so much as a drag of a cigarette and that was after being a heavy smoker for 20 of my 35 years on the planet.

You are obviously a competitive person or you wouldn't play bridge. Find someone to quit with you that you wouldn't want to lose to. That's it, that was my secret!!!

My wife suggested months before New Year's that we quit on New Year's Day. I went along with "the joke" and said "Sure, no problem." Throughout the Fall and into the holidays she'd often remind me that we were going to quit on New Year's. I'd always say "Sure, no problem." Midnight came and she said "That's it - no more smoking." Still going along with "the joke" I said "Sure, no problem." The next morning the wait began for her to have a smoke so that I could have one too. It's been two years now and I'm still waiting for her to have one. I'm sure she too is just waiting for me to have one - but that's not going to happen.
