IMPs, all vulnerable, you deal and hold:

Void
X
A9XXXX
AQTXXX

The auction proceeds:

1 - (1) - 1 - (4)

What's your call?

We open these hands 4NT so this will be coming back to me at 5/6minor or 5 with partner taking no action. In any case I would have had an easy pass.

Nevermind if I start with 1 I have an easy 5. Even if it turns out that 4 or 4X was par it is plain wrong to not bid our second six-card suit. We have a possible slam opposite Kxxx and a stiff diamond.

I must bid!!!

5 since there was no box to vote for something stronger, although 5 looks like enough to me.

Yes, I like "Pass is your friend"... But... 6-6 ers come around once every month... If one passes on one of them one times too many, one risks to be dealt only 4m333 Yarboros... I'm not a very superstitious person, but 4m333 with 0 hcp is a BIG risk.... 5... If u fail too many times, you can always explain this reason...
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

It's good to see a near unanimous verdict for the 5 bid that I made. The only reason for posting this hand is that I played it while flying back home (yes -- at 36000 feet B)) and at that time, all other people had let the opps play in 4.

BTW, I didn't have to worry about a decision over 5 because my (randomly picked up) pard decided to bid 5 with his hand (suffice it to say the his hand isn't remotely close to making such a bid). Luckily, he gave up on after the opps cracked it and I pulled to 6...

Let me play devil's advocate. Partner has a chance to bid again. Partner leads a spade and I ruff, get two aces and likely partner has either SA or minor king or minor singleton/void, it is likely that 4 is going down and I get a positive score. I better be pretty sure that I'm missing 5m to bid on past 4 then. I have 4 losers in my hand and partner may not cover any of those losers. If partner is really a non-minimum he can bid again and then I'll bid 5. Notice Atul wound up in 6 and wasn't shouting that it was a great score. We don't want to play results here but it is one data point to see whether our action was good or not. I'd like to know what the winning action was. 5 seems like the obvious bid and would the problem have been posted if the normal action was the winning action?

Note that I did not make any mention of the result and the only reason for this post was that I was astonished that I was the only person who had made the bid thus far.

Also, I think it's losing bridge to P on this hand because partner has a chance to bid. Why would you expect pard to bid anything if at all?

If he isn't a minimum he may bid. If he is a minimum then why do you want to be in 5m going down when 4 is likely also down?

I got dealt a hand like this at teams recently:

void
x
AQ9xxx
KQJxxx

I overcalled 4NT, and confused DOP. :D We did tho have a good laugh on the phone afterwards.

Why is 4 likely to go down if he has a minimum hand? Do you really want to defend 4 if partner holds a weak hand w/ say 4+ cards in either minor?

Besides, why speculate on what partner holds when the course of action is pretty clear cut with the cards that you hold?
