A claim was made in another thread about what the 'most popular' opening bid on this hand would be. I happen to disagree.....

Scoring: IMP

Assuming I am playing 2/1 or SAYC and in first or 2nd seat, I open 1 and consider it to be very clear with this superb 10 HCP hand.

In 3rd seat I might preempt in and in 4th seat I might open more than 1 also, but most likely just open 1S since I don't need all that much from PD to make game.

I will also add that vulnerability plays no roll in my decision to open at the 1 level in any seat.

Certainly 4 at matchpoints or whenever I'm in need of a swing. 1 at imps in neutral state of match.

Me too.. I rebid 2 unless my PD responded 2 in which case I raise.

My 6 carder is really strong and good enough to play opposite a stiff, whereas my 5 card suit is weakish.

Having opened 1S I would certainly rebid 2D if possible - the main strength of this hand lies in its distribution and I would want to start early letting partner know that I am not 6332 which a 2S bid would imply.

I voted 4S. If the question was asked again I might well bid 1S.

My usual feeling at IMPs is to not give an inch in competition. Here I am pre-competing.

No strong feelings on this one

I can see arguments for 1, 2, and 4

I might very well make any of these bids depending on blood sugar levels

I can't see any argument for 2S. I can for pass, and frequently do it on this type of hand - but the suit quality of Diamonds is inadequate to be sure of backing in safely.

For me the choice is between 1S and 4S, and either might work on the day. I voted 4S. 6S seems to require some special cards, and I cannot see us stopping short of 4S with confidence that game is failing. On the other hand I really would rather not argue the toss at the 5 level, and opening 4S perhaps reduces that risk.

Roth stone weak 2bids can be 2 suited hands very often.....think 2 suited hands with one suit 6 cards long that most of the world is opening with a one bid. Not sure but it maybe true that having some unknown 2 suited hand is more common for a weak 2 bid in Rothstone then having a single suited hand. :D

I would open 1 spade, I voted for 1 spade and now I wish I had opened 4 spades, this is quite normal for me :D)

I feel 1 is the 'right' bid. But 4 is much more fun and possibly more effective. And I'd like to be in 4. After 1-1NT (F/NF), I can't describe this desire very accurately. 4 and 3 are very misunderstandable.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I voted 1.

I normally open this kind of hands 4 in first seat, but not at unfavorable at IMPs.

1 is my style, but don't disagree with 4 openers at all.
