Scoring: IMP

Contract 4 by South with opps silent. Bidding 1-2-2-3-4
Bidding was supposed to be BBO Adv, but that is another story.
Lead 2, 6,3,7.
fwiiw opps play standard leads. East I believe to be an expert player. West is not.

I failed to make this contract choosing a line that could have succeeded had I guessed the trumps right. Nevertheless I am not sure I chose the line most likely to succeed. Opinions on what is the best line and why?

Running a bit on instinct, getting to the bottom of the bottle of Yaldara Eastate Barossa, I voted for playing on Diamonds.

A 3-3 Diamond break is below 40%, but the chances are that a defender with short D has the longer trumps and would be ruffing with a natural trump trick. Also, if the shorter Diamonds are with RHO all your options appear to remain open. You may yet have to go for Club ruffs, but I don't see the urgency. The weak trump suit argues for going for Diamonds. If they break 3-3 you are in a commanding position.

To increase your chance of one of the opps using a natural trump trick you could cash the A first.

I am expecting the hand with the long trumps to be ruffing the third round of Diamonds. In that event cashing the Spade Ace first does not appear to gain anything, but I am happy to be overruled.

Cashing the Spade Ace first does appear to be preferable if the Diamonds happen to be 3-3 and someone started with S:Hx doubleton. But then, if the Diamonds started 3-3 I am pretty happy anyway.

My main objection to cashing the S:A to start with is that it cuts down on options for ruffing Clubs, should the run of the Diamonds not work out perfectly.

Possibly flawed reasoning, but as I say, running on vapour.
