I think its the nature of the beast that is created by 12 board matches if you want to try and win the event or just play real bridge.

If you want to rack up high scores
1.very agressive openings
2. very agressive pre empts
3. agressive overcalls
4. weak notrumps

say this was a national event with world class players and it was only 12 boards per session. Are all the world class players gonna play down the middle...I dont think so. now if the event was played like it is here where it is a barometer and ll hads are played at the same time i would expect some wild shenagicans going on towards the end say like the last 4 boards....if the boards were rotated so that hands were all played at different times with no barometer i wouldnt think so.

so there are alot of variables involved in what to expect and not expect from results.

I think my 12bd scores are improving as I try and play down the middle. OF course at my level of bridge that may mean something else compared to an expert but I do seem to do better if I just try and play within myself. In ACBL online land the opp may steal a board but more often give me a chance with a high rate of errors that give me chance for a solid board if I am up to it.

One small example of my trying to play down the middle last night was on a hand where I thought of x 3 spades with 4 trumps and 2.5 quick tricks after my pard had opened. I passed and but was able to x 4 spades. My partner chastisted me, saying I had a clear x of 3s. This was a hand where the opp did make an aggressive NV overcall.

Another example was when I opened 1s at unfav vul and passed the rest of the time and the fav vul opp bid and made 5clubs with an easy overtrick. I just did not double despite opening and partner showing a weakish hand with long D. For me this was playing down the middle.
