Hi all
My level bil playing SAYC
Please whats your opinion. I bid 2d avoid to bid michaels even by definition this fit even with range 8-10 or over 16 but I was not sure how many players consider that second range. I didn't bid 2h thinking of biding space. My pard expert said with this hand I should double first.

Thank you all in advance for your advice
It's not what you are, it's how you say it!

Yes, you have 17 HCPs. On the other hand, it's an aceless hand with stiff SK. I would treat this hand as 15 HCP (or so), and would bid michael 2S.

I am not sure what you mean here by saying "I didn't bid 2h thinking of biding space". If you mean that 2D was lower than 2H and thus saves space, You are wrong. As a matter of fact, to bid 2H first saves space. When you bid 2H and rebid 3D next round, pd could correct to 3H if he doesn't like D. But if he doesn't like H and you bid 2D and then 3H, he has to correct to 4D. And if your pd does have fit for H, your find your major fit earlier.

The lack of aces and stiff K make this, IMHO, just short of the strong range for Michaels and not too strong for a 2 level overcall of 2♥ followed by a 3♦ if possible.

If you play Michaels as any range..OK just use it, but I play it as either weak or strong so I overcall 2♥.

If PD cannot respond to your 2♥ overcall and the hand is somehow passed out, I really don't think you're missing game here.

I am a 2H bidder. I prefer "pure" hands for michaels (don't really care too much about intermediate range as long as they are good playing hands and primarily offensive).

Hi,

there is no correct bid, but I would suggest,
you bid 2H the next time.

Dbl is out, take out dbls are reserved for 3-suiter,
and you dont have one.
A 2S Michaels bid is an option, but usually one
plays it, that one is either weak or strong, i.e
one does not use it on intermediate hands like the
given one.
If you plan using Michaels bid on intermediate hands
you need to discuss this with partner before hand.
Given the vulnerabillity, a 2S could be real garbage.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: The space problematic speaks for 2H, but also,
that 4H is your most likely game, if you have game.
question
With kind regards

There is a convention ( A variant of Roman Jump overcalls if i remember right) whereby 1x by ops, 2 NT by you, shows a 4 loser 2 suiterhand.
Would that be appropriate here?

2N in Roman shows diamonds + another. Thats at least in the version I play.

2♥ is possible, but I like it for tactical reasons. If we don't end up buying it, I'd rather not tell declarer about my 2 suiter. OTOH, a Michaels call is certainly resonable.

Perhaps your expert PD thinks this poor 17 HCP hand is too good for a simple overcall. In spite of the nice ♦'s, I don't agree with him since it is aceless and you have a stiff K.

This may be why he stated that you should double. .. neilkaz ..

You are quite right not to bid Michaels on this hand. However your most likely game is in H not D, therefore you should bid 2H. Note also that if your pd has a strong preference for D, you are forcing him to make that at the 4 level with your sequence.
