Watching Justin and Ira C,,, bid a late night, simple, by the book 2/1 auction to 3clubs:

1s=1nt
2d=3c
p

You would think this would be pretty basic with responder having a weak hand with 7 clubs and opener being 5-5 with a void in clubs, but no......
Justin won 5.9 imps and was the only one in this contract.
Classic by the book auction, nothing fancy but so much we nonexperts can learn from it. :)

It's indeed basic. What could opener do except pass?

I think I had something like 16 points so maybe thats why the field got messed up... dunno.

Passing with misfits is always good

Hi,

1) He can bid 3NT in case he holds 2 cards in clubs
and a stopper in hearts.

2) Depending on the 2/1 flavour you are playing,
3C could have been invitational strength, 10-12,
depending only on the meaning of a direct jump
to 3C.
In other words, if we are talking about a pickup
partnership, ... there are several reasons,
why things went as they went. (*)

(*) In short: ignore the results of the main bridge club,
look at the complete hand, and decide for yourself, if the
result was ok.

The post said opener had 5-3-5-0.

:) I was not 100% sure, what basic stuff you
refered to.

Just the auction

1s=1nt
2d=3c

without regard to the special opening hand or with
regard to the special opening hand, thats why i
described opening hands, which may find another bid
over 3C.

Basis stuff is, that the 3C bid is a sign off bid (*),
which opener should usually respect, i.e. he should
pass, but he can still bid game, given the right hand.

(*) assuming the approbriate 2/1 style

Assuming "weak" means, say, 8 points give or take, it would seem the auction should begin the same way at a SAYC table. Justin's guess that opener, with his 16 count, just couldn't bring himself to pass 3C is probably the explanation.

A further issue, along the lines Marlowe notes, is that the world is heavily populated by folks who play 2/1 and have never discussed what they will do when dealt long clubs and just under game forcing strength. With the club void I imagine opener should pass 3C anyway, but it's easier if you know responder is limited to a bad 10.

This may be true, but unless you have some specific agreement, responder must bid 2NT. 3♣ is a sign-off.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

From Mike Lawrenes 2/1 CD

Invitational Jump Shift to the 3 level – [full endorsement] (Can’t use with Bergen raises)
Responders jump to 3 level is invitational, shows 6-7 card suit, and around 9-11 HCP.

If opener bids again, its forcing. (responder might rebid 3NT, or rebid his suit at the 4 level)
Opener raises to the 4 level is forcing. Optional – it asks for Aces. Either is a good method. Discuss it!
Don’t make the IJS with 4 cards in the other major, bid 1NT. (1S – 1NT - ? – 2H difficult hand to bid)
Never make an IJS with 3 cards in openers major, bid 1NT.
If opener in turn jumps to game, it’s a sign off.
If opener raises the suit its either an Ace ask or a forcing bid, hoping for more info.
