I just played in a tournament and would appreciate your opinion on the
>> following hand:
>> W Inge10 (me): QJxxx clubs, Axx hearts, Qxxx spades, K diamonds
>> N AKxxxxx clubs, Qx hearts, A9 spades, Jx diamonds
>> E KJxxx hearts, Jxxx spades, AQxx diamonds
>> S club 10, xxx hearts, Kxx spades, 10xxxxx diamonds
>>
>> The bidding is as follows:
>> W: 1 club, N: x, E (my partner) xx, pass, pass, pass
>>
>> No alert after the doubled clubs, so I presumed the bid was for Take-
>> out, and had no problems playing it in 1 club doubled with 10 pts. in
>> my partners hand.
>> Of course as it turned out it was, according to the lay of the cards,
>> a penalty.
>> I complained to director about it and got no satisfaction from
>> him/her.

your opinion is appreciated

>> Thanks for your time

Welcome Inge,

what should the TD do?

1. In my country f.e. it is forbidden to alert alle "pass, X and XX" bids. I know, this is a silly rule, but it is a offical rule too.

2. In which jurisdictaion must a penalty double be alerted? I think it is the other way round, if you have to alert doubles, you must alert all doubles which are not penalty.

So bottom line: I would be surprised to see an alert of a penalty double and would have asked anyway, because you never know here in Germany.

Of course 99 % of all players play take out doubles in this situation, so it had been NICE to explain the double to the opponents, but I see no way how a TD could change the score.
Kind Regards

Roland

Under BBO rules, the double must be alerted unless the tourney rules say it should not. This is simply because it's an unusual agreement. The fact that it's natural and that dbls are not alertable in some countries is irelevant to online bridge,

This does not necesarilly mean that the score must be adjusted. If the double had been t/o, RHO would have a penalty pass. In this case, LHO had a penalty double. Does it matter for your decision to leave the rdbl in, and/or for your partner's decision to rebl?

But maybe you would have declared differently if you knew it was a penalty double.
The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket
