Scoring: MP

Playing 2/1 in a regional matchpoint pairs, you open 1 and hear partner respond 2NT jacoby (this shows a game-forcing heart raise with 4+ trumps, tends to deny shortness, doesn't require anything extra beyond game values). You rebid 3, showing 16+ high card points but denying any singleton or void. Partner bids 4.

Now it's up to you, bid on or pass it out?

If you are playing any sort of decent system, then this is a clear pass. Partner could have made a cue bid, or bid a serious (or frivolous) 3NT (or 3) but didn't. He is just not interested in slam opposited a 16-18 semi-balanced hand.

If you are not playing a decent system, then you are basically guessing. I still pass though. So that if we do miss a slam I can use the hand as exhibit A in my case to change the system.

Pass, wtp?

Sry, but partner denied the Ace of Spade, and the
Ace of Clubs, and the King of diamond.
Why ask for Aces?

Can he hold a Singleton or Void?
Not really, since he could have made a splinter,
which would have shown game going values with
shortage.
And he cant have more than game going values,
since he signed off after he got the best response
to 2NT.

With kind regards

What is our cue bidding philosophy after 3? Would 3/4/4 show extras? Would they show they the Ace or is OK to cue a King. I also assume that if I tried 4N, it would be read as a spade cue. Last - what is the difference between 3 and 3N in your methods after 2N?

I'd like to steer the contract into 4N if I can. If we are playing 1430, I think thats realistic if I try 4 now.

Assuming I trust my partner, I pass.....although it is hard to imagine any sort of 2N response that does not contain either the spade A, the club A or the diamond K.

QJx KQxx QJxx Jx? Egads. It may qualify (just barely), but I am not sure I would bid 2N on this collection at the table.

Since I said I was 16+, partner should cuebid any Ace or king he may have, imo. Even if you dont cuebid Kings immediately in this sequence, he certainly has denied both black aces since my hand still isnt totally limited (other than by the failure to open 2C). Since he didnt, I think I have to respect his opinion and pass 4H except......its matchpoints and.....

5N certainly should be reasonably safe. You might try bidding 4S or 4N (Whichever is RKC), and then force partner to sign off in 5N after his response to 4N....or pass his 4N (1 keycard response) to a 4S inquiry.
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?

I no longer play this form of Jacoby, because there are better versions available. However, the raise to 4 is an unusual call after you have made what is systemically a strong slam move. He must have the worst imaginable 2N bid... the kind of hand on which some prefer to bid a forcing 1N then jump to 4.

Bidding on at this point may work, but it is an insult to partner and I would consider it only if I had no intention of playing with this partner again. If I consider this player as someone with whom I will play in the future, I pass. If slam is good (not: 'if slam makes') then we can discuss this after the game and point out that a cue by him (or 3N, depending on agreements) is not a slam force or anything other than a non-horrible hand.

I would have to pass as I must be off 2 aces in view of no cue bid. While I suspect partner must have had a cue bid available I am not able to bring myself to push this hand past the 4 level.
