Scoring: IMP

LHO opens 1D pd overcalles 1H (8-18HCP, mostly 5 Cards) RHO passes

You play Robson-Segal-Style, what IMO implies, that You can't bid
2D respective 2NT, is it clearcut to bid 4H?

Looks spot on for a 2NT bid to me.

What's wrong with this?

In Robson/Segal style, 2NT shows an offensive hand, with high ODR. In my opinion, this hand's ODR is too low for 2NT. I would go with cue + 3, and leave a dbl by pard at the 4 level.

As Overcaller I would take 2D + 3H from advancer as 3Card-support
(max. 4Cards with low ODR) and invitational values (something
like 7Losers and 3 Controls outside).

Hum.. well, I seem to remember now that Robson/Segal recommend mixed raises, e.g.

(1) 1 (pass) 3

3 = 6-10 hcp, 4 card support, mildly defensive hand.

This hand seems to fit this description exactly, no?

No, a classic mixed raise would be xx KTxx xx Axxxx
Nice shape, good ODR, too strong for 3 HE (Preemtive), Too weak for 2NT
For a preempt 3H he mentioned a hand like x KBxx xx BTxxx

Well, you have 4 bids available

2
2NT
3
3

(4 is an overbid on this bad shape, defensive hand.) Since there is no bid that clearly shows you hand, you have to see where it comes closer. I'd say a mixed raise or cue.

Bid 2, and if playing as my partner, pass my 2 bid.... if I bid that....

1) too strong for 3
2) too strong for 2
3) Not strong enough for 2NT (too low offensive potential)
4) Not suitable for 3 (mixed raise)

This is a simple transfer advance type "sound raise" to 2. Forget about the fifth heart here.... show your values. LOTT is good, but it is not all encompassing.

LOL I'm in the wrong forum again here...

8-18 seems like a big range to me - I tend to inexpertly double rather than overcall with ~16+, and any action here without a fair ~9 then seems unnecessary excepting 3/4 as preemptive support with poor hands. This IS a nice 9, so 2 for me under those circumstances - 2 would be ~12+.

I don't know the first thing about Segal-Robson, so I'm completely unqualified to comment...but the stated range would seem to require that I respond with less. I'd like 2 as a 'good raise' I reckon.

I'm curious, why is 2 not available?

Because your average 2 bid is made on hands that are quite different from this one, e.g.

xx
Axx
QJxx
xxxx

2 would be a possibility not playing R/S style.

Mixed raise at 3-level seems right, if available.

Otherwise I'd rather overbid 4 than bid only 2 or 3.

I would like to say, is everyone on crack? You have a low ODR 5 card raise. Certainly this is enough to go to the 3 level, so pick your poison from 2N (4 trumps, limit+) and 3D (mixed raise). Its probably 3D in my book, but 2N is certainly in the realm of possibility (correct odr, but maybe not enough total O)...

I am just bidding 4H.

Just bidding the game at Imps and letting partner think I do not have any aces or kings outside the trump suit.

Would make a mixed raise of 3D if the boss suit spades had been the trump suit.

Order up a mixed raise barkeep!

It's a bit of a judgement call, but I prefer a mixed 3-level raise.

- 2 doesn't show this hand
- 2 as well
- We're too weak and too defensive for 2NT
- 3 is an underbid
- 4 may well be an overbid
- No fit jump available

So all there's left is a 3 mixed raise.

I completely agree with what Ben says.

Yeah, this is definitely a 3-level hand at least. Q is an annoying defensive asset, but the 5422 shape plus intermediate honors in the 4-card suit (maybe we can develop a club trick on offense) make this a reasonably offensive hand. I would much rather bid 4 then sell this as a 3-card support high-card raise.
