60 board match, teams of 4 scoring, total points. One of you and partner have overbid.

Scoring: Total Points

4 4 P 5
P 6 P 6 all pass

LHO leads the 8 of clubs. Plan the play.

I think the diamonds need to be 3-2 to win. I will draw two rounds of trumps before I play diamonds the third time.

Ok, rho has KQT9xxxx in clubs.
I win the ace, take one round of spades and play the queen of Diamonds. I win the return, play a diamond, ruff a D high return to hand and draw trumps and diamonds.

I need not much more then diamonds 3-2 for this plan. If rho has the ace of Diamonds and continue with a club, I need him to have the doubelton diamond and spades 3-2 or a singleton 9 in rhos hand.

P.S.: To draw two round of trumps will loose, if the one with the ace of Diamond has a third trump. I doubt that the benefits of taking the second trump will be higher then the loss to this possibility.
Kind Regards

Roland

Club A, spade to K, diamond down, just in case RHO has singleton A.

Our declarer played a spade to the queen and a diamond up, hoping to guard against 1318 in RHO's hand, but this doesn't work, because LHO can win the second diamond and play a second trump.

Yup, you need instead to lead a diamond towards hand, not towards the Queen. Not just in case RHO has singleton ace, but in case RHO is 3-8 in the minors. Declarer went off in just the way codo described: Q of diamonds lost to the ace, club back on which LHO discarded his second diamond.

I went for 800 in 4Cx in the other room, so this wasn't our best board of the day.
