Scoring: IMP

Bidding:Power Precision
2♦-2♥
3♥-3♠
3NT-?

Your P opens2♦ 3rd seat after pass from you and your LHO.
2♦=Either Weak 2♥ Or 4-4-4-1 shape 16-24 hcp
Or 26-27 balnced
2♥=Pass or correct
3♥=1-4-4-4 ♠ single 20-24 3♠= how many controls?

Now in our system 4♦ is invitation ,4♠ is grand slam force asking for Queens and all other calls including 4 Nt passable.

Why are we thinking about slam here? We have a maximum of 8 controls (maybe 9 given a stiff K♠), but w/ only 4 trumps to take care of a weak ♠ suit, slam seems mighty optimistic.

Give pard:

X
AKQX
KQXX
AQXX

and even 5♦ doesn't seem that rosy on a trump lead and continuation.

I would just settle for 5♦ and hope it makes.

[quote name='akhare' date='Jul 25 2006, 01:09 PM'] [quote name='zasanya' date='Jul 25 2006, 12:11 PM'] Give pard:

That looks automnatic for 5[di] to me, and slightly over 50% for 6[di] if you bid it (though you'll down more than 1 if it fails). 2 spade ruffs, 3 hearts, 5 diamonds, 1 club in 5[di], finesse the club for the 12th trick in 6.

What am I missing?

Whoops, I guess I gave pard a too ideal hand. How about this one? In any case, I think that slam is too optimistic IMO.

I think I know enough and would bid 6♦ now. Aggressive, but sinceI don't have the means to find out where the remaining high cards are, I'll just take what I think is the percentage action.

This in fact was the hand that Partner had with ♦ 10 too.
♦ were 2-2 .♠ were 3-3 :P
My Partner argued that he was unlikely to have ♠ ace and so we had 8 out of remaining 9 controls and I should have bid slam.
I think an optimist here would bid slam a pessimist wouldnt. :D
My reason for not bidding slam here was that my team mates were a pair of school boys being coached by me and we were playing against the defending champions .The oponents on the other table were playing a primitive version of precision and I thought the contract on that table would be some number of ♠; 4 or may be even 5.It was in fact 4♠ but then ♠ were 3-3 .............
