A few tips for all, and especially for inters playing with "experts".
1) LIST what you play, most experts can do it your way so why make them guess.
I'm advanced+ (if I defended better, and was more familiar with defences to non 2/1/SAYC systems, I'd call myself an expert)..and as an example, it really is frustrating to play with someone listing an American flag (like mine) who obviously is fluent in English and who lists absolutely nothing as to what they play, and often takes me 3 times asking as to what they do play to which they reply "Basic SAYC" and I am left to guess whether they play J2NT and whether 1m-2NT is GF or 10+ to 12 invite ..etc etc.
1a) With the above in mind, how hard is it to learn BB Basic ? Answer.. not very hard.
2) Determine what carding you'll use. If just standard carding, please say so ! Along the same lines, signal attitude aggressively. It really is frustrating when I lead the K and PD has the Ace and plays the deuce !!
3) Realize that you and PD are on the same team. If you pushed a bit to invite game and he pushed a bit to accept it, and then guessed wrong trying to make it and went -2, be sympathetic and say "nice try PD, I was a bit aggressive with my invite".
4) When you make a mistake or even missguess, saying "I'm sorry PD" goes a long way towards helping the partnership and also lets your PD know that you have a clue and realize that you likely erred.
5) Don't be clueless..ie..I played a few hands, with an Adv PD and we even had a discussion about 2/1 gadgets. All went well until the following unopposed bidding 1H-1NTF-4H-4S by me which was passed !!! My PD stated that I could have a long spade suit and that she bid 4H due to "fast arrival" (having 7H and about 14 HCP). My hand was on the borderline between a 2/1 GF and a very good 3 card limit raise so I probed for slam (needing a 2nd round D control). 4S obviously was a disaster and 5H was 100% cold as expected. When I asked how many spades 1NT showed, again I was told that I could have a long spade suit for my bidding.
LOL we all know it is 3 spades max. Don't act clueless, and don't pass obvious Q bids.
6) Work on your declarer play. Watching a decently played hand or two as dummy, goes a long way towards respecting your PD.
Just some experiences..feel free to agree or disagree ... neilkaz ...
