Pass could work well
You hope to pass partner's takeout double or bid 2♦ in an auction like
(1♦) - P - (1M) - (P)
(1N) - 2♦
Unfortunately, I'm worried by my major suit shortage. I expect that if I pass, the auction is going to be at 2M before I get a chance to bid, in whcih case I'm pretty much shut out of the auction.
I prefer an immediate 1NT to clarify my values and approximate shape...

I wont call you old-fashioned. I will tell you that your RHO beat you to the punch when he opened 1♦ before you had a chance to, which makes it impossible for you to do so.
Sometimes it helps to read the whole problem.
So many experts, not enough X cards.

Oops, sorry, didn't see it was MP. Then I agree, 1NT makes sense, and preempts LHO from bidding their 4CM.

If it goes 1D-1M-2M. I guess I would bid 2N next
