In these situations, I use the rule of 8, expecting partner to have a reasonable 7 or 8 points.

Lets give him an ace and a king that are worth tricks, say ace of diamonds and king of clubs.

I'll lose 2 spades, a club, and possibly a heart. That's 500 against their 420 or so. And partner can have less than this.

So I pass, hopefully in tempo.

Well, 4♠ definitely is making, but we'd need 3 cover cards in pard for a good sacrifice and I don't think that's reasonable. Pass. At any other vuln, bid.
