Playing a "natural" system, pass is clear. Sorry Ben...
Playing Sabine's canape Precision, 1♠ is clear.
Playing my own Fantunes system, 2♣ is clear (I am less picky then the world champions. They would pass this hand since 2♣ shows 6 cards or a singleton).
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do!

The ugly auction after a 1♣ opening is

1♣ - (P) - 1N

The opps have an 8+ card heart fit and are likely to hit the right lead

No problem, you have a 9 (seldom 8) card club fit anf could bid clubs till 3 Club. Maybe 3 Heart is not making.
Kind Regards

In most of my partnerships, a 1NT advance shows a balanced ahnd and (typically) denies a 4 card major. (In theory, a 1NT bidder could hold ♠Kxx ♥xxxx ♦KJx ♣Kxx)

I don't think that there is any inference that partner holds 3+ clubs. I'd happily bid 1NT with

♠ Kxx
♥ Kxx
♦ KTxxx
♣ xx

1♣ for me, I have a decent hand, and I don't have ANY rebid problems! And for the various methods of evaluating the hand: 7 losers is ok, ZAR says it's ok, rule of 19 is ok, I want a ♣ lead so 1♣ ok, in any case we have a rebid that gets us to a good spot,...

Btw, what is the problem with 1♣-1NT??? <_< Just rebid 2♣ and play in your 9+ card fit...

1♣ -- this hand has much more going for it than a quacky 12/13 HCP hand w/ scattered values.

I suppose pard might bid 1N, but unless he's exactly 3-3-5-2, we will have a good 2♣ contract. Even if we don't land in a 8 card ♣ fit, 2♣ might play pretty well...
