Disclaimer, I haven[t been to that many shows. I almost saw Junior Wells on his last tour. Went with two friends, they'd just started dating and were an hour late and we couldn't get in. I wonder if they're still together.

I went and saw Steve Miller Band at the Fender center in Corona, CA on Saturday night. The Fender center is a guitar museum, but it also a music school for (mostly) under-priviledged kids. Miller believes in the cause and gives a fund raising concert for the center whenever he is in town.

At the beginning of the show, a custom Stratocaster was auctioned off that had Miller's winged horse painted on the guitar. The bidding started at $25,000. When it petered off at about $80K, a secret bidder placed a bid of $100K and the guitar was sold.

The secret bidder was Miller himself! He wanted the guitar kept in the museum. He later then decided he wanted the guitar sold to the next highest bidder at $80,000. The mortgage for the Fender center was paid off in the process.

This ties the record price set for an autographed auctioned guitar with the Rolling Stones.

And yeah the show was awesome. He played for a full 2 1/2 hours. A few of the students played with him for one set, that included a lot of old blues standards.

The harmonica player, Norton Buffalo, is worth the price of admission alone. One of the best in the world.

I've only been to two concerts in my life: Janis Joplin in Oklahoma City, who the police arrested on stage about 15 minutes in.

The second was Herb Albert and the Tijuanna Brass in San Francisco who were not arrested by the police and had George Carlin in suit and tie as their opening act.

Joplin was better.

It was sometime in the mid-seventies at Wembley stadium, an all-day concert.

Can't remember all who were playing, but it included The Band, Joni Mitchell, and finished with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

This was in the days before big screens, and we were right at the far end of the pitch from the stage, so it was tiny figures in the distance producing massive sound.

Another one was Handel's Messiah at the Royal Festival Hall, again in the seventies. A friend was in the chorus and got me in free.

Don't get to concerts much any more, tinnitus.

Gipsy Kings before one of the members passed on were absolutely superb. I missed them recently in town here at Wolf Trap and was very disappointed; their musicianship is outstanding.

I feel obliged to change my primary choice. In September last year, I visited a "Coldplay" concert in Vienna, Austria....I have never seen and listened a band that plays and sounds so much better live than on studio CD's.

Little Richard, sometime in the fifties, at a dance hall in St. Paul. I realize the incongruity with the other choices but I am not entirely kidding. LR was on a slightly elevated platform with his piano maybe ten feet from the dance floor. I was in my teens and went up to the window where they were dispensing beverages. It went something like this:
I'll have a 7 Up
What do you want in it?
7 Up
But what do you want in it?
I just want 7 Up.

My experience with many modern concerts is that the music often closely resembles what you hear on their albums, maybe a little extemporaneous material. With LR it was all fresh, whatever moved him at the moment. Gonna go tell Aunt Mary about Uncle John, he says he has the miseries but he has a lot of fun... Indeed.


My wife was young and living in SF in the sixties so she could better speak to that era. I was writing a thesis in Minneapolis.

I never visited a concert with celebrities. Only when friends of mine were performing.

Gosh, I remember so many great concerts in large halls and stadiums from the 1960s and 1970s that I couldn't begin to pick one of those.

With age, I gravitated more to concerts in smaller, intimate theaters. A 1996 Richard Thompson concert at the Variety Theater in Atlanta really stands out for sound quality and musicianship.

Only two events really stand out in my memories:

1) I saw Janis Joplin get arrested after being charged with leud public behavior at a concert in Oklahoma City - cops came up on stage and hauled her off.

A proud moment in Bible Belt history.

2) In San Francisco in 1966, I watched George Carlin get booed off the stage before he could say a word because the crowd wanted the headliner - Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass.

Yes, but unfortunately, Guns & Roses was pretty bad the night I saw them. Metallica was great, and Motorhead was solid.

The best concerts I have ever been to are (in order of date) The Seekers Final Concert when I lived in Australia in the 1960's.

The only other I have been to was to watch a person perform at his own venue called the Shrine in Lagos Nigeria; that man was Fela Ransome Kuti and his band the Africa 70; superb renown African artist who became a great friend whilst I was living out there

I have. I suppose they put on a good show (lots of energy), but I never liked their music much. Another Canadian band that has put on some of the best concerts I have ever seen is Rush.

It baffles me that so many of you can remember the years that your favorite concerts took place!

I went to a lot of shows I really enjoyed in the early 1980s but I have no idea what the specific years were. Some of my favorites (in no particular order):

- The Who
- The Rolling Stones
- Simon and Garfunkel (there was something historic about this concert - maybe the last ever time they sang together?)
- Elvis Costello performing with Squeeze
- Rush

All of these took place in Toronto (except one of the times I saw the Stones was in Buffalo and one of the times I saw Rush in Las Vegas a couple of years ago - can't remember the exact year of that either even though it was recent!).

Lots of old timers come through Vegas. In recent years (again not sure which years) I saw the Moody Blues (still sing well), Crosby, Stills, and Nash (don't sing well anymore but still fun), and Elton John (hopeless).

My alltime favorite live concert was BB King who I saw at the New York State Fair in 1998 . The other that sticks out in my head is I went to see Loggins and Messina in Vegas on one of the first stops on their 2005 reunion tour. They were still surprisingly good!

I had to look up the years Fred. If anyone just remembered then I agree they are quite amazing.
