While trying to read through the "How to play" instructions, the screen keeps filling up with other people's chat. Can I turn off this chat when I want?

Yes. There are three chat options for turning off chat...

1) turn off lobby chat. You probably should do this.
2) turn off chat from enemies. Most people do this
3) turn off all chat... BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL OF THIS one....

If you turn off all chat for some reaon, be sure to turn it back on. You will not believe how many people turn off all chat then ask yellows questions. Guess what? If you rutn off all chat you will not be able to hear ANYONE.

What you probalby need to do is just turn off "lobby chat".
To turn these on an off.. from the main lobby double click on your own user name (or right click on your username and choose edit your profile). Then find the three chat boxes on the lower left hand side. Put check mark by any chat type (from above) that you want to turn off.

ask the club to remove you from membership. That does the trick.

Have the best of both worlds: add "broadcastUserId" to your enemies and then set ignore chat from enemies :)

Doesn't work. :) (Especially not for mail messages.)

It doesn't work for individual people, either, when they broadcast to all of BBO.

Only yellow ids can broadcast to all of BBO.

The bulk mails from clubs take 2 forms.

1. Chat
This can be blocked by marking the sender as an enemy. However, this has drawbacks if you then intend to play in his tourneys

2. BBO Mail
Cannot be blocked, at least at the moment, AFAIK

In general, tho, bulk mail from clubs can best be handled by telling the club to stop sending you mail. They will stop, or you will tell us and we'll make them stop. But perhaps as a member of these clubs, one shouldnt object to bulk messages ? Don't know.

But I dont necessarily want to be removed from the club. I just dont want 30 gazillion messages filling up my screen everytime they make a "tourny in x minute announcement." Trust me Ben, the Homebase messages are tame (and much appreciated for their brevity) compared to some other clubs that use up the entire chat area and then some of the next page as well.......and are rebroadcast every 10-15 minutes. It just gets annoying.

‘clubs’ aren’t the only people sending bulk messages, I’ve played in a tournament only to find that my UserId has been harvested and now I am on the recipient list for broadcast messages.

Blocking the UserId does work and the TD is not necessarily the same UserId that sends the club broadcast messages. If they happened to be the same you could remove the enemy status if/when you joined their tourney.

Not an ideal fix at all but it does work ….

That may be true....but I am referring specifically to clubs that I am a member of. And it is not "mail" I am receiving, I only get these notifications if I am online, as a private chat message....ie, chat to club.

Yes, I could mark these people as enemies....but they really arent, and I may (even do) wish to talk to them at other times.

So whats the answer? Allow club member to block out online and / or offline chat? Should the club manager be aware of this ? Should club member be allowed to get himself off the club list ?

Bottom line is, there is no good solution. The only way to be removed from list, is to be removed from club. That is not an option.

I would like to be able to disable chat from clubs, but I can also see (and understand) why the clubs would not want their members to be able to do this.

Never mind, forget I said anything.....one can always dream though.....

:D
