Scoring: MP

You open 1NT and the bidding goes:
1NT-(P)-P-(2S)
P-(P)-3C-(3S)
?
Your partner could have bid 2S transfer to C initially. After his 3C bid you expect that he prefered to play 1NT above 3C (MP's) and that he has values just below a limit bid (being red): 5 or 6 card Club and about 6 or 7 pts.
Opps are intermediate/advanced.
How many points on 10 do you give for a 4C bid? ... what if vulnerabilty would have been green?

the better players might disagree, but i can't see bidding here... partner knows the strength of my hand... partner couldn't or wouldn't bid over my opening, and partner still has a bid coming... oh, and we're vulnerable

I'd be much happier with 2 low spades rather than QJ tight of spades. That's 3 points that are completely wasted.

I would give 4 a score of 1 out of 10.

It might work, but I strongly disapprove.

Partner may have stuck his neck out to push the opps to the 3-level: other tables might be defending 2, so you rate to be slightly better off than the field, on average: don't throw it back via 4. While you may well escape a double, your hand may well lead to -200 anyway.

As has already been noted, the QJ of is the worst imaginable holding.. a true negative factor: you no longer have a 1N opening bid.

I am a generous, kind, sympathetic kinda guy... besides, maybe it will score 130 or only o down 100 v 140..... it is remotely possible, therefore, on a top of 10, I'd give it a 1...... which is not a good matchpoint score.... even for me

I rate 4C as the hangman. Is a minus rating allowed?

I think requisite reading for any duplicate player is "The complete guide to duplicate bridge" (I may be butchering the name) by Sidney Silodor, Fred Karpin and someone else (Norman Kay I think). It came out in the 60's and is a classic.

They talk about situations exactly like this. Pard probably won the board with the 3C balance, and an intelligent pard will do it on Qxxxx of clubs and out, but he could have more of course.

Pard has already bid your hand. The only real suprise in your hand is the 4th club. The QJ of spades is filth.

There's a term called 'hanging pard for his balance' and its about cases like this.

To compete to 4C you need an UNUSUALLY good hand probably five clubs and no spade problem.

I give 4C a zero. I really give it a .3 but I round it down:p

I am not even sure, what 3 was, or do I know, that we don´t play Leben/Rumpel/Rubensohl?
But even if I would know, I surely will pass now and thank pd silently for his balancing.
My rating for 4 Club is somewhere between -10 and -5.
Kind Regards

Roland

It's not quite a zero because it could work. It's not hard to construct hands where 3S is making and 4C is making or an undoubled one off.

So I'd give it 1 out of 10.

Some of these posts are perhaps unduly harsh to 4. If the vulnerabilities were reversed then I think 4 is a very normal bid. It might make, and will often be one down opposite 3 making. At these colors I would certainly consider 4 if the spade QJ were in a different suit.

I'd give 4 something like a 3 out of 10, and explain to partner that I thought were were at green. Tough being a color-blind bridge player sometimes. :)

I did bid 4C. Thought it was interesting to post it here...so that I would not do it again.
4C was doubled by LHO and did go -2.
RHO did have nine tricks in S and they could make 4S+1. RHO did only bid 2S because 1NT bid was over him.
