You are playing [15-17] 1NT with standard Lebensohl and South-African transfers (not Texas!!!).

The bidding goes:

1NT - (2D*) - 4H! - (pass!)
???

* Alerted as: 4H and a longer suit (canape' style).

a) Do you agree with 1NT opening (look hand below)?

B) What do you bid with...

A10
KJ6
J96
KQ10863

...and why?

a) no, if you play 1NT 15-17, you don't bid 1NT with a semi-balanced hand with 14HCP and 14 CARDS in your hand. I've done that with 13 cards in the past, and I got it backfired too much.

B) If partner has a normal bid, he goes through 2NT, everything at 4-level is to play imo, even if it's the opponent's suit. But I think your partner means a transfer for S or an Ace asking bid.
I guess it's better to bid pass and be angry if he's the one that made a mistake...

Second question first, I pass 4H's. After a two level overcall, my four level responses are unchanged. When playing South African (which is rarely), I play a bid of 4M to play. Thus, pass is automatic here for me. So not a tough decision.

Second question, playing 15-17 NT, does this hand qualify? When playing 15-17 NT, I do list my range as 14/15-17 to indicate upgrades on good 14 point hands. Since we have 14 cards, its a little tough to decide. The CLUB KQT-fifth or sixth is a plus. The kind of thing that allows me to stretch to open with 14: the spade Ten, and heart 9 are nice additions, if these were "x's" I would not.

Rough hand. This would be much easier if I had a clue what 4H showed.
Absent discussion, I would assume that 4H is a splinter.
Partner is sitting on a game forcing hand with either 4441 or 5440 shape, and a stiff/void in Hearts.

I'm going to bid 5C.
Too much chance that LHO will bang the Ace of his long suit and give partner a ruff for me to be willing to play in slam.

Sorry for the 14th card. Take away a diamond. I had 2326.

4H is a fantastic PTB.* I would pass 4H, if pd had something else in mind, well then we are on different wavelengths. If it was a splinter, I would expect 3H followed by some other bid.
Be neice to know if you played Leb or Rubensohl or whatever here.

* Partner Torturing Bid. (Like an ex pd of mine who delighted in double reversing relays just to see if I knew the system).

I have read somewhere that by default, Texas transfers should apply if opponents bid at level 2, so I will bid 4s, and after that discuss our system with partner :)

You are correct, if you are playing TEXAS transfers, the correct bid would 4S. But the original poster specifically stated you are playing South African Transfers, and NOT texas transfers.

Pass since I think in South African TRF it shows Hearts. And I would not open 1 NT, unless I was in 3rd or 4 th seat. But that is marked on my cc :)
