I was using GIB yesterday on the free day and was looking at some of the results, since the results were all against other people playing against 3 GIBS.

On 2 hands of 16 my GIB was the only one to go down in a game contract for losses of 11 imps on each. So i went back and looked at the auctions and leads. At my table one GIB was the only one to lead a certain card where at the other tables the other GIB's led different cards. What causes this variation? Setting the thinking time would be what i assume would.

I also noticed that one time it opened an 18hcp hand 1NT playing 15 -17 in first seat.

It isnt just the thinking time. We've been going back and forth with the author to understand these beasts (with an eye towards investing into improving them). This is what we've learned (i think).

When it is gibs turn to act, it generates a number of hands consistent with the bidding to date. it then plays them out double dummy, and takes the "best" action.

If it has more time, it will process more samples. But sometimes it is a close decision and then it flip flops between actions on successive tries. Or sometimes a particular sample just happens to skew the results in a certain direction.

Thinking time will have some impact. So will the speed of the host's PC.

But another factor is this: GIB uses simulations to help it "judge" the best action in various situations. The random deals generated by the simulation are different on different PCs. The specific deals that come out of the simulation will impact GIB's judgment (especially on close calls).

Additionaly, GIB uses the bidding based on the meaning it has assigned in his database.
Lets take a fictional example:
GIB1 HUMAN GIB2 GIB3
1 X 1NT p
p p
The GIB's will now assume the human bidder has both majors and a specific strength. They will use their own hands, the played tricks and this information to create similar deals to decide. If you don't hold strength or distrubution as promised, they will take all decisions based on a wrong set of deals.
Sometimes the cards played by GIB make no difference, sometimes you loose a trick and if you are lucky you get a gift.

yes i undersand the GIB simulations as I have the commercial version and know how to use the bridge.exe command line function. What caught my interst was that on 4 hands the auction was the same 2 leads were one thing and there were 2 other leads. So the only conclusion I could come to was that the thinking time was different.

So then are we saying the all the bridge.exe functions are being run by the client machine(0urs) not BBO's. I know that the last commercial update GIB did people were complaing that they noticed no better performance from it and faster cpu's.

When you use GIB for:

- playing in the main bridge club
- partner/opps for partnership bidding
- asking for DD analysis
- asking GIB for advice

The "thinking" takes place on a specialized version of bridge.exe that resides on your hard disk.

When you play Money Bridge or in Money Bridge Tournaments, GIBs thinking is done on our server.

In which way is that version specialized? I could not find any substantial differences from the official release (apart from it trailing a few minor releases behind the thing you can purchase).

Asking again about this because it somehow fits into this thread:

Apart from the options the robots are run with, what are the bidding system settings for the robots?

I guess it's 2/1, but with which conventions enabled?

I'm interested in setting up my (full) version of GIB at home in the same way as the robots on BBO so I can practice for MBTs.

We use the default conventions ("GIB Standard")

ok I was wondering about that because say we were able to set up a tournament with GIB's and people on the FREE Day, the TD's would need to be able to set or just have a default setting on the thinking by GIB allowed.

It would interesting to see then if there was a correlation between results and CPU/memory(power of computer). ;) You would think so.
