Double is for penalty. Do you double?
Someone (is it me?) doubles and 2♥X makes +2. 1070 on your score sheet (opps column).

Particularly at IMPs - you are unlikely to set it more than one trick, so doubling stands to gain little. Even at matchpoints it is distinctly dodgy.

Well, I wouldn't use those words but basically yes. You have the balance of strength but they might easily have a great heart fit. Doubling for penalty is a huge risk.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Did you think about bidding 2♠ when 2♥ comes back? I think it has become standard that this shows a four card suit with another place to play just in case, after failing to transfer earlier.

I would just pass. Actually, depending on opponents, I like the penalty X at MP if they're red. At imps, no way.

I am afraid that I consider the penalty double to be 'stupid'.
The making of a stupid bid does not mean that the bidder is stupid (else every bridge player I know is or has been stupid at some point, with particular emphasis on me). Smart players learn from this kind of error. Indeed, the fact that they made 2 overtricks (!) means that you are more likely to remember the lesson from this hand than if they had managed to just squeak home.
So the bid was stupid, but the bidder was not, unless the bidder does it again!
Doubling a partscore into game is a foolish (stupid?) move if the hope is to turn 100 into 200.
And as jdonn says (migod, I'm agreeing with him far too often
) points don't take tricks. I usually add "cards do".
And you don't have defensive looking cards here, if you assume that your vul opps have a decent 6 card suit: all he needs is ONE entry to dummy to take 6 trump tricks, the entry in dummy and one side trick...

Think about it from the opposite side: You know well that you can make game in a major with a good fit and 20 hcp. Hence trying to make 8 tricks with a good fit and 18 hcp isn't such a bad bet.

i personally don't see any great need to double this at imps, but i'd almost always do so at mps
