Meanwhile
1. does it happen if you use another username?
2. by lockup do you mean "Waiting for server" or that the program becomes unresponsive to mouse & keyboar?
3. try a full reinstall from http://online.bridgebase.com/

When I get on AOL, if I use my Aopen modem (proper driver and software option clicked in settings) the bridge games are slow even tho AOL shows me as being at 50K.
If I use my external US Robotics (20 year-old) modem, AOL indicates that I am connected at only 45K but the site speed for bridge play is at least twice as fast....what's up with that? (I use this all the time but I am curious if I am doing something wrong.)

Al, you should try the following:
Dial in with the "dodgy" modem and open a DOS box (by going via Start->Run... and entering "cmd"+Enter).
Then run the following command:
ping -n 10 bbo.bridgebase.com
and look at what average time it reports. Repeat this for other popular sites (like www.google.com etc.) and compare the average times.
Repeat with the "good" modem and see if there's any difference.

The ping worked on my work computer (but BBO is locked out by the firewall)
On my home computer (subject in question) It would not recognize the command line, saying that there were elements missing etc. (I typed it in VERY carefully) so I didn't get a chance to try...
"cmd"+enter) or
"cmd"+enter).
??? I think I had the . there all the time...

You took it way to literally :-).
Like Uday said: After going via Start->Run... a box should pop up. The box has a text entry field, which you can use for running arbitrary commands.
Enter cmd or command into that field and hit ok (or the return key).
Then you will get a text window with a black background which you can use to run further command, such as the ping command given above.

max 3807 ms
