Scoring: IMP

P - (P) - 1♦ - (1♠)
?

I don't remember the exact hand, but this was pretty close. After passing in first seat, RHO bids 1♠ over your partner's 1♦ opening.

Is it pass, X, or 1NT?

I'll go with 1N. I don't find pass to be an adequate solution with this type of hand, and Xing with 3 small hearts and a balanced hand seems more of a lie than 1N with J9x as my stopper. You did leave out what, imo, is a very valid option (2D).

Yes. I should have added 2♦ to the mix. Please feel free to add it yourself. It was even more valid given that my partner's 1♦ opening promised 4.

2♦ gets my vote. I like raising on three cards; the fact that partner promises four makes it easy.

I like 1NT the shape is right, the values are right and Jxx is a stopper.
The empiric demonstration of why Jxx is a stopper is that every time I have bid NT with Jxx as a stopper nothing bad has happened. Quite scientific isn't it?

Playing weak NTs I would bid 2D. Playing strong NTs its close... I would bid 2D if 1D promised 4, otherwise 1N at this vul and this vul only.

Your partner never has Ax and RHO both the King and the Q?

2♦ for me

I hate bidding 1NT with no stopper when there is a reasonable alternative

2♦ or 1N, but 1N works more than it should. :)

It can slow down LHO, or they will misplay the spade suit if they buy it, or pard might have a 1/2 stop as well.

2♦ is the honest bid, and I agree with Josh about raising if we are playing weak NT's.

2♦.

I have two alternative ways to prove Jxx is a stopper:

1. The dictactorial proof: it is a stopper because I say so

2. The mathematical denial proof: stopper? what's that?
