Takeout and Takeout of course.
I'm tempted to bid 6♠ but I can't mastermind the auction
So 4♠

At imps, I bid 5♣

At mps, probably 4♠

The second double is primarily takeout but will be left in quite often. The lack of a 5♦ call by either opp worries me: I suppose it is still possible that partner is 4=4=1=4, but I suspect some 4432 shape with doubleton ♦.

There is no compelling reason to expect a 4=4=2=3 rather than a 3=4=2=4, for example: my possession of extra ♣ length has only a minor impact on expectations.

Furthermore, I see very little chance of our having a 5=4 ♠ fit and even a 4=4 is in jeopardy should the suit break 4-1.

I think that 5♣ rates to be the safer game, and that is my goal on this hand. I am not thinking of slam. Sure, it may be cold, but I am unable to make any move that would help partner, so it is irrelevant. And I don't care about losing an imp to a successful 4=4 ♠ game.

I may end up being sorry if partner is 4=4=3=2 (altho I am not always down in 5♣ when he is) but I rank this as less likely than his being 3=4=2=4 or 3=4=3=3 huge: in either of the latter cases, 4♠ may become uncomfortable on a 4-1 or 4-2 trump break (or even a 3-3)

I'll go with 4S and hope we have a 4-4 fit. I can think of many layouts where 4S makes and 5C doesn't, unfortunately I can think of many where the converse is true as well.

4♠, despite the very long ♣s...

4♠ for me too. It's likely to be the practical contract

Well, there's the danger of being tapped out in 4♠ if trumps don't break, but then again, how are we taking 5♣ if that's the case?

So, 4♠ it is and let's hope...

would he bid any differently? I can make 4♠ on a good day, but I'd rather be in 6♣ than 4♠ (not that I am getting to slam).

The reality is that most hands both games make and some hands one makes and the other fails. The question is whether there are more hands that fail in 4♠ (due to the fact that there is a significant risk of LHO holding 4♠ and that you may be in a 4-3 fit) or in 5♣, due essentially to the risk that partner has 4 good ♠ and short ♣, plus you are a level higher.

My vote (and I appear to be in a minority of one) is that 4♠ is more dangerous than 5♣, but I think it is exceedingly close and I certainly do not fault 4♠

I think that 5C is slightly safer so I'd bid that at IMPs.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

i will bid 5♣. but the reason is to show my valuable hand--otherwise i will transfer this t/o double to punish.

partner shows his great hand with 18hcpS+, if he has some honor on ♦ and between 17-18hcps,he tend to overcall 1nt even if 4=4=4=1,of course maybe 4=4=3=2 .

i will believe opps 4♦ preemption and partner's choice, with a viod and 21 valuable HCPS and 9cards trump ,5♣ has chance. if i bid 4♠ i never shows my valuable hand.,and it maybe lose slam ---of course it isn't the focus but has some help to analyse.
