What do you folks play over the following sequence (let's assume 5CM and normal raises, but it will be interesting to hear from the 4CM folks as well):

1M - (P) - 2M - (X)

What would the following bids by opener show?

1) 3M
2) 2N
3) Implied suit cue bid (say 2♠ over 1♥ - (P) - 2♥ - (X))
3) XX
4) P and then 3M if possible
5) P and then X of 3 level bid
6) New suit at 3 level

To me it appears that XX is a pretty useless bid in this situation because it takes advancer off the hook and gives them more options as well.

1) 3M = Competitive, LAW bid (extra trumps, no game interest)
2) 2NT = System on, forcing
3) No such animal as implied suit cue bid. Opponents may not have spades.
3) XX = Interested in penalizing, set up a force to 3M.
4) Pass & 3M = I don't know. undefined, maybe irregular tactical manuver (like walk the dog)
5) Pass & double = penalty. they landed in my second suit.
6) New suit = system on. GT (Help suit / 2nd suit / short suit, depends on specific partner's preference)

I think redouble is quite useful, as responder is involved here, for he now knows we own the hand and may double the opponents effectively.

Btw, one interesting possibility here is to pass and wait for one round before blasting game. Playing this way give you more information about opponents' hands with the drawback of giving them more room for locating a profitable save (maybe slight chance if they are vul). This funny gambit i first read about from Michael Rosenberg.

Don't you mean 2NT ?

2NT lets the opponents off the hook. XX on the contrary retains the possibility of punishing them, and at the very least forces them to reveal something about their hands.

For all those interested, would your opinion change if the sequence was 1m (9-13, showing the corresponding major,♣for♥ and ♦for♠) and the resposne of 2M was often made on 3 card support and a hand with 5-9 points? If this is the case, can anything resembling, "I want to penalize the opps" be possible. I think that any action by opener should show extra length in the trump suit and a maximum. Maybe XX should be 6322 or 7222 max and other bids should be HSGTs.

1) 3M

Competitive with 6 cards in hearts. Usually minimum or something like that.

2) 2N

Invitational without a singleton.

3) Implied suit cue bid (say 2♠ over 1♥ - (P) - 2♥ - (X))

New suits are invitational showing shortness (singleton)

3) XX

XX desire to penalize the opponents, now all doubles are 4+ cards and for penalties

4) P and then 3M if possible

This shows 5 cards in hearts just to take them out of their LOTT comfort level

5) P and then X of 3 level bid

Takeout

6) New suit at 3 level

Invitational, shortness

1. Extra shape, no game interest
2. Natural, Game interest. This is an unusual bid since you didn't xx, so I definitely do not expect a 5332 hand. This is probably a 6322 type hand with scattered values.
3. 2S natural, game try, usually a 4 card suit or Hxx. Implied suit bid? Its one thing to play "implied" cue-bids in michaels sequences where the opps have shown a 5 card suit without bidding it, but here the opps have not even shown a 4 card suit. In general I don't think that the opps showing a 4 card suit is enough to prevent us from playing in that strain, and here they only showed 3+ spades....
4. A game INV or better hand with interest in defending. Sets up a forcing pass at the 3 level.
5. Usually a hand that would want to compete over certain of the opps bids, so typically a singelton in the suit they got to but only 5 hearts.
6.Penalty based on a good holding (usually 4 cards) in that suit. Note: There is theoretical merit to playing xx then x as a 4 trump penalty x, and P then x to be promising only a 3 trump penalty x. There are many possibly ideas, here. I am just presenting standard agreements.
7. Game Try, natural, usually a 4 card suit or Hxx.
