Scoring: IMP

West North East South

- - 2 Pass
2 Pass Pass Dbl
Pass 2 Pass 5
Pass Pass Pass

2 alerted as 6+ major weak or 19+ and balanced. Looking for answers as to how the bidding for North SOuth should have been. I was south and pretty lost because my partner and I had never discussed defence over a multi 2 diamond. I thought 3 might be confusing to partner and 3 clubs would show a different hand.
This hand is from a tournament where most SOuths just jumped to slam when their partner bid spades after the x of 2

many thanks :)

From an earlier thread you may find this useful:

http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?sho...efence+to+Multi

All 17+ hands (except 17-18 balanced) should start with a double. Waiting is dangerous for two reasons:

1. It will be very difficult to describe that powerful hand later.
2. LHO may pass 2 and you never get a second chance!

(2) dbl (2) pass
pass 3

That will be forcing. 2 after an initial double would also be strong (17-20) but non-forcing.

I happen to like to play multi-versus-multi. Over 2 with south's hand I double, I play this shows
  • An opening hand with one of the majors
  • A balanced hand with both majors stopped and 19-22 hcp
  • 19+hcp and a three suiter
Other bids show,
2 good 15 to 18 balanced, both majors stopped
2 or 2NT --> transfer to minor with opening hand in clubs and diamonds
3 and 3 = preemptive, let them figure out from here what to do...
3, 3 - michaels, bid suit and minor
3NT - monster balanced, say good 22

Here I would treat this hand too good for 3 and double, planning on clubs later, but 3 would get you to slam as partner with double fit will bid game with the meger values. At the table, the bidding would have been

2-X-2-X <--- second double is responsive showing spades.
Ps->>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> now 6 is easy, if overcallers suit was hearts he pass 2X.

Well agreeing multi vs multi is a waste of time IMHO unless you think you will have to defend multi very often with this partner.

I think Roland's suggestion is very natural. Double-then-bid shows a good hand, we are used to that! Double-then-jump shows an even better hand, we are used to that too.

I would hope my auction to go:
(2) X (2) P
(P) 3, then:
3-4
5 (slam try) 6
Pass.

I have to agree this is true, with one caveat... If you play multi 2 yourself, adding multi-versus-multi is painless and easy. If you face lots of multi's it is also worth considering even if you don't play multi 2.
