Scoring: IMP

West North East South

Pass Pass 3 Dbl
Pass 4 Pass Pass
Pass

I am sure there is a very good reason for bidding 4!hs with the North hand but since the expert at the table wouldn't explain why, I was hoping some of the experts in forums would. Oh and just for your info, this was months back, in a paying tournament on bbo where kibs were disallowed.

Many thanks,
Rona

4 is non-existent with that North hand; 4 looks reasonable though. I am not implying anything, but I doubt that you can find any expert, let alone an intermediate or beginner, who would bid 4. In theory, NS could have the agreement that double of 3 shows a heart suit, but I doubt it.

As an aside, 4 also makes despite the 5-1 trump split, so it's not a big deal at IMPs.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice

Misclicking is a good reason :D

I'm with misclicking as well. Can't see any other reason.

Thanks. At least I know there is no "technical" reason to make that bid. No it was not a misclick. I asked north, whom I happen to know, why he bid 4 and not 4, but I was ignored.

Three explainations
  • Misclick... meant to push 4!S but hit wrong button
  • A mistaken view of how to bid (I will bid 4!H and if partner doesn't like he can correct to bid 4!S)
  • UI being shared between NS ("info that 5!H and 3!S with south somehow shared")
Any of these can be the "right reason". Number one is by far and away the most likely. Nuber 2 if North is total beginner and confused, and number 3, well, let's just hope not number 3.

If I was a beating man, I would say either of first two is right answer, as with no kibitzer, and they are sharing info, south would simply bid 3H over 3D and north raise to 4H. That was priobably the auction at every table where 3D was opened (or almost every table)....

IF you are thinking this hand might play in hearts or spades, you could bid 4D as north and pass partners bid, You mioght be 4-3 heart fit rather thand 4-4 spade fit, but you could do that if you liked. Bidding 4H is not the way to get into either suit.. you will play 4H if that is your bid, as in this case.
