does anyone know of a good computer program for BIDDING? I have the bridgemaster and it is fantastic for play but of course does not address bidding. Also have GIB but since I don't play 2/1 I have found it frequently to be frustrating and at times bewildering..I am unable to play sometimes for a couple of months at a time and would love to find a program I could take with me so it doesn't feel like starting all over again every time I return to BBO....

I have used the trial version of "Jack 3.0" which I think is an excellent Bridge playing program. You can pick from many systems and conventions for it to play with you. I suggest you give it a try (the trial version is fully working but you can play only a few hands that have been included).
Bridge Baron is also quite OK in this regard but I found it quite weak and also I liked the user interface of "Jack" a lot more.

The best place to practice bidding is off course the bidding practice area on BBO. This is obviously not what you are looking for (because you are often away from BBO for months) but I think that this feature of BBO is not used as much as it should, so I wanted to mention it.
I have used bridge baron sometimes when I was travelling and bored, but I usually end up cursing at my computer screen. I'm sure that Jack is much better.

I'd agree with using Jack for bidding practice. You could even learn 2/1 with it but alongside a 2/1 book. Although Hardy and Lawrence are the recognised authorities, I'd suggest Paul Thurston's "25 Steps to Learning 2/1" . It is a very good book if you are new to the system.
