I just played in IMP pairs tournament #527 (Tsunami) and was a little surprised by the results of the tournament. Partner and I had a couple uninspired boards. Our final score was +.25 IMPs. Strangely enough, this placed us as pair number 20 our of 26. (I would have expected to place somewhere roughly arround #13). When I looked at the results

Postitive IMPs totaled: +271.9
Negative IMPs totaled: -50.41

Curious how this might have come about... Does this suggest that massive numbers of pair quit the tournament based on bad results?

It was probably a survivor, where pairs are cut each round. I think the final score is those not cut. The way to check, check board 1, see how many tables, then check last board (where clearly there was only 26 tables).
