Your partner opens 1 and may have a 4 card major and 4 diamonds..

Do u bid and if so what?

How do u handle the potential rebids?

Does your decision change playing 2/1 or SAYC?

Do u think opps are likely to balance...

I'd LIKE to bid 1 but can imagine the horrors caused by 2 or 2NT rebid from partner. I'll just pass, hoping to soon be playing a system that does not have opening 1-bids with 11 - 22 HCP.

1, hopefully we are playing a 1NT rebid as 15-17/8 not 15-16. Pass is worthy of more consideration playing a strong NT, because the opponents are more likely to have a game (or, at least, the values to protect) if partner is short.

1H. The only bid that scares me is 2S, hopefully I will get a 4C call more often :P

ditto. A 2NT rebid is also unpleasant but since 3H is forcing thereafter a pass would follow with only moderate discomfort.

1. This is a minimum for me. With K-5th we pass.

Over 2, a lebensohl 2N. In my old Hardy 2/1 book it says pard only bids 3 with club tolerance. So at worst we'll play 3 or 3, but may back into a heart fit. If he has: AQJxx, x, AKQxxx, and rebids 3, I'll heard for the hills!

I guess jump shifts aren't game forcing anymore.

I pass. I know there's a growing sentiment that almost any hand with an Ace should respond, but I haven't hopped on that bandwagon yet, especially considering that the standards for opening bids have declined in recent years.

I HOPE partner has opened with a very light modern opener, that is one of the best case scenarios for me. We will have a decent shot at screwing the opponents out of a game if their high cards are split.

Haven't thought about that exact question for a loooonngggg time.

But if a decent 3-4 count is enough for a response, and a chunky 17 is a enough for a JS, should a jump shift be a game force? Of course, there are some 22's that we are making a JS on as well, even some 3 suited 24's.

Take my example auction of 1 - 1 - 2 - 2N. Perhaps with the upper end of the jump shift Opener needs to make another strong call.

There's been a lot of toys developed to help bridge these gaps, like 1/1/1 is a one round force.

And of course, there are several excellent ways for a semi-strong hand; +/- 19-22 that have been mentioned on BBF. Ryall, Gazzillii, French Std, my 2/2 all fit within these categories.

As much as I tend to pass when I am weak partner's openings, here I would bid 1, if partner has 18 balanced I will try 4

I bid 1. The plan is:

1 1
1 1NT

1 1
2/3 pass

1 1
2 2NT.. whatever that means

1 1
2NT 3 (forcing)

In classic K-S the style was:
1. respond 1 of a major over 1 of a minor much lighter than standard
2. do not jump shift over that on 19 or 20 with 4 spades
3. after a 1 over 1 over 1 auction, responder has to bid again unless his first bid was made with less than 6 HCP
4. jump shifts to 2S are game forcing (like normal), but are slightly better hands than normal

Note: since minor suit openings were sound the ranges for non-jump shifts are really about the same as in standard. Both ends just differ by about a point and a half or so.

In any case, no matter what your NT range and structure, I will always bid Axxxx at the 1 level, and here I have some shape, so I have serious game potential. E.G. After 1D-1H-3H, I think that hand is good enough for 4H.

Well 3 would certainly be GF. Over 2, I also play a Lebensohl 2NT, which helps to show sub-standard first bids (but mostly is useful to confirm GF auctions when I'm not sub-standard: 1-1-2-3any)
