Late to this thread. I pass first. Second, I agree with 3H.

Would you bid 3 or pass after 1, pass by you, 1, double by p, 2 by RHO.....

And if you think 3 was wrong, which was worse, the double or the 3 bid?

I guess I'm where I wanted to be : 3 Spades is likely down one, every double is takeout in this auction, let's relax and enjoy the opponents taking the pressure.

I like the contract of 3, but I don't like the dbl. I believe that when the bidding goes (1)-p-(1)-p;(2) we can still try to get them one level higher. Bidding immediately shows imo too much ambition for game.

Without any agreements, I'd take 3 for a merely competitive heart bid (pard might have cued with a better hand). I'll pass 3 because I don't have much in terms of extras and the club KJ is a bit of a weary holding.

oh no.
the cuebid indicates that he has 2 other suiter with 6-5 pattern, emphasize ,a 6 cards major.

4-5, something like 6-10 hcp (tending to the low end if 5, towards the high end if 4).

We could have a game, but many of the hands that produce game involve partner having little to nothing in spades, of which there is no guarantee (and partner might bid game in this case, if he can infer our shortage from the auction). A game is a lot more likely if my RHO bids 3, but in any case partner can figure out that the spade raise makes my spade holding likely to be stiff, and bid game himself on something like: xxx AJxxx Kxx xx (and note that even on this nice-fitting eight game is not the world's greatest bargain if AQ are above the bidder and diamonds are lead early on).  Anyways I'm passing 3. A game bid is more like x KQxx AJxx Axxx at a minimum.

With that hand he would surely have overcalled 1H if the H were decent. He probably has scattered values and a 5 card H suit headed by the J. The initial X was a poor call.

I'm quite late too.
However:
  • I would not have doubled in the sandwich position - it shows either a 5-4 in the unbid or a stronger hand
  • 3 H is quite ok, more or less what I expected. Btw, another hand that shows the advantages of Lebensohl in these auctions

Despite the fact that you almost all agreed with Rex, thanks for your input anyway! LOL :)

While I don't like the initial double, I would still get to 3, because I (and probably everyone else) will make a takeout double of 2 when it comes back to me. This double is a much better description of my hand, as it also shows clubs, my best suit.

I'm not doubling on the first round or even considering it.
If I do, I've already overstated my hand and pass from now on.

Not sure how great 3H is - I'm definitely passing but I think it's the least of the evils (doubling on the first part of the problem being one of them :))
