with my normal partner I'd open 2N: exactly the posted hand, 12-14 HCP witha 6-card minor in 4th seat.
In a pick-up, or playing standard methods, I'd open 1N (4th seat, but even 3rd)

Comment the first: The hand is clearly strong enough for an opening bid
Comment the second: I'd like to be able to open 2♦
Comment the third, in the absence of a 2♦ opening, I like 1♦. 3♦ uses too much bidding space. Partner will never be able to understand that a heart stopper is critical but we have Spades stopped.
3♦ could work very well if the opps have an eight card major suit fit, however, I'm not willing to give up on a light game.

I like 1N on this particular group. Opposite a passed hand, the most logical game contract will be 3N so I might as well suggest this right away. For a 1 diamond opener, I'd like to have faster tricks such as Axx, Ax, KQ109xx, xx where we might be able to peel off 9 quick ones opposite the right hand.

I'll try 1NT not overly pleasing but would rather force the opps to step in at the 2 level where there might be considerable risk. I know opening 1D will allow for a perhaps disruptive major suit overcall. I think a NT gives me the best chance to buy the hand and game is not out of the picture.

With a good opening hand, decent defensive values and a good suit I think I'll open this with one in my suit. This is called the opening bid convention. It's highly controversial and probably not allowed except in high level tournaments, but they can call the director if they believe I am using unfair mathods.

The benefit of not letting them in at the one level only means that if they have 5 H they will lead them against your NT contract........1D gets the message across that you have a good hand or spades or both and would welcome a D lead against any contract that they might end up in. Your rebid(s) are also made easier.

I opened 3♦. I don't love it, but this was against a very agressive pair, and I wanted to shut them out. I bought it and pard's hand was: ♠QJ9x ♥AKxxx ♦xx ♣xx. I made some good guesses and was +130 for an Average +.
1N leads to an abysmal 3N. I'm guessing if you open 1♦ you'll play the same 3♦.
Give me the ♦J and I think its an auto 3♦ opener. Pard should bid 3N with a few QT's.

If the opps are very aggressive, they would have already opened if they had some glimpse of a major suit
, in which case 1♦ look fine.As for pard bidding 3NT on a few queens and tens, I don't think so. If you don't have the canonical 25 hcp, you need quick tricks, not slow ones.

1N for me, that's just how I am. It has the advantage of making major suit fits harder to find for the opponents, making the defense harder for the opponents, positioning my KJ well (and maybe or maybe not my Jx), describing my strength reasonably well, describing my shape reasonably well, and getting to NT at matchpoints.
If partner has a random 10 count I am indifferent about whether I get to game or not.
I really hate 3D even if it shows this hand (not that I think it does) because a major or NT could easily be our best strain, and we may be able to buy the hand cheaper. Feel glad your partner's major was hearts and not spades.
