Scoring: IMP

South has a 6/5 hand. Normally when you have a 6-5, you will try to insist on one of your suits. Here, however, partner opens 1♠ and you have to be a bit more cautions, for any of spades, hearts, or diamonds might be the right contract. Furthermore, in most systems, you will have to start with 1NT because a 2/1 promises either a rebid (10+) or is game forcing (13+).

After 1♠-1NT, North will typically rebid 2♠, but some North's might try a creative 2♣ to allow partner to describe his hand. After showing the 6th spade (and usually a minimum type hand), South again has a problem. The void club could be quite useful in spades. If south could make a trial bid in spades, he would, but most bids now are natural and sign-offs. Thus, a few Souths will venture the only trial they have: 3♠, and I believe North should pass.

This hand appears to be a win for sayc bidding, plus Elianna's good judgement. Our auction:

1♠ - 2♥
3♥ - 4♥

Elianna's 2♥ call was not game forcing, although it does ostensibly show 10+ points. My raise to 3♥ established a game force, and Elianna's 4♥ bid denied any further ambitions. Contract looks pretty good to me, especially vulnerable at IMPs. :)

We didn't do so well here

1♠ 2♦
2♠ 3♠
4♠

I must be better for South to show a five-card heart suit either immediately or by bidding and re-bidding if necessary hearts on the second and third round of bidding.

If playing standard 2/1:

1♠ - 1NT
2♠

No one to blame so far, and no way out. You can't win them all.

1♠:2♥
4♥

2♥ in theory shows a 10 count opposite our light (rule of 19) openings. Not sure what call I'd have come up with on that hand.

1♠-1NT
2♠-3♠
4♠-Pass

Here is one the system might have let us land quietly in 2♠, but we clearly overbid in spades, but we should have found four ♥'s. We play Ritong 2♣, where a rebid of 2♣ over forcing 1NT is made on all hands with 15 hcp, many hands with 14 hcp and a few hands with 13 hcp. So my 2♠ rebid is extremely limited. Generally this shows 6+ spades suit, 31 or less Zar points (around 14 or bad 15 hcp or less with 6322, 13 or bad 14 with 6331). Facing six spades and less than 14 hcp, with Hannie’s hand I probably would have passed 2♠. However, Hannie could imagine some magic fit hands, so he invited to game.

Unlike in typical 2/1 auctions where 3♠ can be a fairly good hand with three card support, and where 2♠ rebid can include some fair hands, my hand (13 hcp, but 31 Zars) is a virtual maximum. When Han invited to game, my hand was a super maximum. However, note, our 1NT NEVER includes three card or more support, so his raise shows a doubleton ♠ and game invite values. Also, to bid 1NT then raise spades denies a balanced hand (or he would have started 2♣ which shows balanced hands good 10+ and some others. So while Han was aggressive with his 3♠ raise, I was very lazy with my 4♠ accept. The mistake I made was not offering 4♥ as a final contact by bidding 4♥ over 3♠, then he would know, that
   1) I was max,
   2) I had only 3♥ as with four I would have rebid 2♥. So on this hand, we should be in either 2♠ (he passes my 2♠ rebid), or 4♥ (I correctly bid 4♥ over 3♠). This was bad bidding by us, not a problem with the system.

Yet another hand highlighting significant differences between MOSCITO and 2/1 type bidding. We produced the auction

1♥ - 2♦
2♠ - 4♠

After opener shows 4+ Spades and ~ 9-14 HCP, East is able to bid 2D as natural and non-forcing, suggesting a contract. The 2S rebid promises a 6+ card suit. At the table, responder decided to rebid 4S. I suspect that this was - in part - due to the fact that continuations over the 2S rebid are some what poorly defined...

Accordingly, I would like to suggest the following rebid scheme pass on a fair simple principle – Responder's advances to the three level should be constructive bids designed to accurate explore for game in Spades (holding a weak hand with a singleton or even a void in Spades, responder should pass 2S rather than scrambling for a fit at the three level)

2N = Shortness ask
3C = 5+ Diamonds and 4+ Clubs, xx (or better) in Spades – invites game
3D = 6+ Diamonds and xx in Spades, invites game
3H = 5+ Diamonds and 4+ Hearts, xx (or better) in Spades
3S = 6+ Diamonds, Hx in Spades, invites game

Even with this type of structure, its unclear if we'd declare in Hearts or Spades...
The following might be possible:

1♥ - 2♦
2♠ - 3♥
4♥

Even so, its unclear that 4♥ will necessarily play better than 4♠.

I'm very surprised at the number of people chosing to suppress the Diamond suit, especially given the weak Hearts...

Another dead minimum for a Fantunes 1♠ this time. Now what will South do? It is a nice hand if partner has a fit...

I'll vote Elianna's judgement only, not SAYC. So I would LIKE to go with awm & Elianna's auction also but not sure that I wouldn't bid 2♦ instead.

Even if not playing 2/1 I would be stuck with the same auction.

I retrospect I wish I had passed 2S. I thought it was a very difficult call, but given our methods I think that pass is right. 4H with Ben's hand is not a bid that would have occured to me (but perhaps from now on...).
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

playing 2/1 1nt semi forcing, that means we bid again 90%+

1s=1nt
2s=4s

Very hard hand, I choose 4s rather than invite or pass since Imps and just bid the darn game. btw we are vul but may still just overbid even nv. Please note 1s can be light not sound but 2s will be 6 card suit.

i think you should invite...."

We got to 3S but our auction was silly.

I opened 1S and partner bid 1N. I thought this was silly as I "knew" we belonged in hearts or clubs given the problem, so I bid 2C. Pard bid 2D thinking we played BART trying to show hearts, but I didn't know/forgot we played bart and bid 2S. Now partner raised to 3S and I downgraded my stiff diamond and passed. I think if partner bid spades-clubs-spades I would pass 2S with Josh's hand.

Our auction will not be repeated at the other tables:

1♠ - 2♠
3♠ - 4♠
P

We use 2♠ as a "poker raise": 0-8 points with 2-3 card support. Since opener is limited, he doesn't bid again 95% of the time. 3♠ shows a maximum with 6♠. Quick and dirty.
A bit of blatant self-pimping - I've got a new poker book that's getting good reviews.
