Scoring: MP

My old bridge partner from the states sent me this problem from a recent game he played in.

What do you open on the South hand playing standard methods? He chose 2 and had a problem already over 2. He chose 2, his partner bid 3 and he bid 4.

Opening lead is a small diamond. His challenge to me was to make 12 tricks. Not on best defense but on a feasible one.

Good luck!

I open 1D. If I were playing to make 12 tricks, I would win the DJ and lead the SJ from dummy hoping everyone ducked and they were 3-3.

1 opening.
I win in my hand, play to the ace, ruff a , to the J ruff a . But even with all the suits breaking good, I only get up to 11 tricks that way.
So I guess i have to play my opps for not so good and lead the J and hope they duck and that the suit breaks 3-3  Good luck to me.
Oh yeah, but then again I think I would be playing 3NT anyway.

I can tell you that he did not run the J. However, consider the defender's point of view "knowing" that declarer has 5 spades from the auction.
