Do you file this one under "preempts work sometimes" or do you see clear-cut error?

I would bid 3H as North -he has a very good, chunky heart suit,
almost worth six cards. He deserved the result, but South is
innocent.

This is what happens when you pass with a hand like the north one. If you don't stretch a little after they preempt you just put too much pressure on pard and get stolen from. Sure you could go minus by bidding, but passing also has risks.

No clearcut error, but I would also bid 3H with the north hand. I cpnsider this a close decision.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Wimpish Canadians like MikeH would pass the North hand and get the result he deserves. True, he won't go for 800 this time and that will be his first message when he writes a letter to the seagulls on Hans Ø.

Put one of the seagulls in the North seat and Mike on Hans Ø and you will see what happens! :D

3 is clear: we Canadians sometimes refer to ourselves as wimps in order to lull our opponents into a false sense of security. It seems to be working, so maybe I should claim that I would pass as North :(

But we Canadians are well known for our integrity so I must tell the truth: 3 is my bid!

BTW, I take Roland's suggestion that I wrote to the seagulls on Hans 0 as an implicit acknowledgment of the legitimacy of Canada's ownership. I can't write in what passes for the Danish language: so I have to write in English (or bad French). Clearly Roland assumes that English is the native tongue of the Hans 0 gull population: how does that square with the rabid Danish claims to ownership??

This is what I got back when I wrote to the seagulls, in Danish:

Kære Roland,

På vegne af alle havmåger på og i nærheden af Hans Ø skal jeg hermed takke dig for din uforbeholdne støtte. Vi ønsker bestemt ikke at være underkastet canadisk suverænitet, så vi håber inderligt, at de tapre danske flådestyrker snart får skovlen under dem!

Canadiske sild smager rædselsfuldt! Der er et yndigt land, det står .........

Mange venlige hilsener,
H.A.V. Måge

P.S. Kan du ikke sende nogle sild fra Østersøen vest for Bornholm? Det ved man da hvad er!

.....

So you see Mike, there is absolutely no doubt in their minds. Danish they are and Danish they will be forever.

To: members of BBO

I set out the contents of a letter which I understand has been sent to Roland.

"Dear Sir

Impersonating a seagull is an offence under both Canadian and International law.

Identity theft has become a major field of criminal activity and the UN recently adopted the Wild Bird Freedom of Identity Protocol.

Your baseless assertion that seagulls on the Canadian island of Hans 0 write in the Danish language contravenes Article 3.0.11©(iii) of the Protocol.

Despite our best efforts, only a few of our more intelligent birds even read: none of them write. If it were not for the insightful and thought-provoking letters we receive from mikeh, I doubt that any of them would bother. Regrettably, none of them are able to write in other than block capitals, and in poor English at that.

You are hereby required to publicly acknowledge your misconduct, failing which the Security Council will consider imposing a world-wide ban on the importation or consumption of Danish Pastries and pickled herring (Norway and Sweden will be exempt from the latter ban).

Canadian law (Section 876(1)(g)) makes impersonation of any Canadian animal an offence punishable on summary conviction. The maximum penalty is almost beyond belief: banishment to Meares Island for up to 6 months, with diet restricted to water and Nanaimo bars.

You have been warned!

Yours truly

'Jonathan Livingston Seagull III'

Lieutenant-Governor Hans 0"

Seagulls?
Those are migratory birds that carry the deadly bird flu, Yes?

Is Bird flu simply some Biological war between Danes and Canucks?

oooops: he has been caught out, red-beaked! I suspect he meant that they cannot write other than by printing....

Of course, I really cannot speak for him.....

This post is now officially "for the birds". Neither of the bird-brains should crow their innocence as their guilt is neatly dove-tailed......North has an easy bid and South should balance as any bid at the 3-level NV should do well....perhaps they should consider a new migratory route?

I bid 3 with North hand, but I would also double with South hand.
I am very short in their suit and have 3 suited TO, a very light one, but I have to protect my pd, and myself sometimes.

Well, I soiled myself laughing so hard at this thread that now I'm on my way to the store to buy a new pair of Pelican briefs.

Agree with Trpltrbl: bid 3 with the North hand, but if he passed you need to Dbl with the South hand. Remember my 'bridge tip' about preempts? Here it would help because the North hand is not perfect for a 3 overcall, so if you decide to pass, partner will get in the auction in 4th seat :)
