3D for me at rubber/imps/mp/total points. I wont pass with 98xxx, but I'm very conservative when it comes to passing t/o Xs of partscores.

Let's try some FTL guessing

If partner is 4441 with 14 working hcp we can make 11 tricks but give her 15/16 working hcp and we can make 6. One issue to think of is if partner has 14 working hcp, they will pass 3d and we will be 150 compared to plus 100 or plus 300.

If opp's are 7222 with 16 working hcp they can make 7 or 8 tricks.

LOTT seems to say we have 15 to 16 total tricks.

I guess I will pass the double but agree it is close.

Too often they will bid 3clubs with only 6 clubs at fav. so need to punish them when I have a chance and I am afraid partner will pass 3D when we have game so that tilts me towards pass.

Pass it. They don't have their game yet so you arent giving up a rubber bonus if they make.

They are trying to push you around and stop you from getting yours. Graciously accept the $3 (or $30) they are offering and win the rubber on the next. Above the line scores are niiicceeee.

When playing with me against me, I would pass, as I try not to be void for making a takeout double, and

well, given I might have KQJ as West, yes I might have 6, but may rather have 5 clubs. I doubt I could pass x xxxx xxx KQJxx at favourable...

If I trust my pard, that's an easy pass.

In our agreements (based on Mike Lawrence books), we do not X in direct seat at the 3 level, unless holding a 15+ count and/or 3+ defensive tricks.
With a normal semibalanced minimum opening (12-13, bad 14), we'll pass.

So, counting pard for 3+ tricks, I have no troubles in passing.

He did, but you can choose to penalty pass with long or strong trumps.

While at lower level, xxxxx in opps suit is not enough to penalty pass, at the 3+ level, it becomes much better.
If pard has indeed the values required for a 3-level t/o DBL, we should grab our plus score.

A takeut double does not always mean you should take it out.

Bleurgh, this is close...

I'm going to pass. If pard has a singleton club honour the penalty should be quite nice, and 3D won't play well at all - if I try to ruff clubs RHO will overruff.

My girlfriend had this hand and wisely passed, her opponents went down 3, yummy!

I said I would have bid 3D.

Sounds like she has more of a taste for blood than you do Han. Perhaps she is a vampire.

Call me Lestat. This is a clear cut pass except perhaps at MP. It's a no brainer at rubber.

They aren't making, so the only way this loses if if we have game, bid game, and can't set it enough to compensate. Even then, we are looking at +300 and we're still 3-1 to win the rubber.

On the other hand how would we feel if we bid game and go off? -100 stinks when we had a sure plus.

I am itching to bid 3NT, as that 98 combo looks like a stopper........ my not-so-random 7 count will provide 3 tricks on defense and pard has 3 or so and plus 300 looks like a fair trade so I will pass and hope to see A from AK in a major......
