Scoring: MP

P-(1♠)-2♥-(2♠)
3♥-(3♠)-P-(P)
4♥-(X)-AP

Do you agree or disagree with this auction? Which bids, if any, do you dislike most?

2H is too horrifying for words. Even white/white MP I cannot stomach thinking about it.

3H is fine.

4H is violating discipline. If you wanted to bid 4H then do it the first time. This bid in a way is worse than 2H.

I don't think that this is a good 2H overcall. Not a good suit, not a good hand.

3H is fine, I think directly bidding 4H is also reasonable.

3H followed by 4H is really not good. I don't think that I was north (or was I?) but I have bid like this several times in the last couple of weeks and I'm very unhappy with it. It is tempting to conclude from the 3S bid that they have 9 spades, but it is much more likely that one of them is short in hearts.

Worst call is the AP by E-W, such bidding shouold be punished (better for NS too).
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

That was just me forgetting to tell about the X...

Then I take it back. Good bidding by EW, good lesson for NS, everybody did well!

Funny.. almost all bids of both sides flirt with disaster, and yet the final contract is ok. It's really a bidder's game.

Sorry I don't understand how 4H X is better than defending 3S. If either the CA or the DK are off you go for 300.

2♥ and 4♥ get -10 points each. 2♥ is atrocious for two reasons:

1. Horrible suit.
2. Passed partner.

2♥ deserves to go for 1100 non vulnerable!

4♥ is inconsistent. Either you bid 4♥ on your first turn, or you keep quiet thereafter if you, reasonably, raise to only 3.

Conclusion: neither South nor North can bid, and North can't defend either by the look of it.

Show me a world class player who would overcall 2♥ with that rubbish, at love all, facing a passed partner.

Disagree.

I like North's initial pass and his 3♥ raise. I also guess after the double, both North and South did well to pass, too.

I strongly dislike the 2♥ overcall. Everything is wrong for this bid. Wrong number of spades, wrong spade card (the queen), wrong suit quality (Jack high), wrong seat (partner is passed hand), wrong location of HCP (in short suits).

I also don't care for the 4♥ re-raise. I am going to guess north felt his hand was a 3.5 raise on the first round. The problem with this walk the dog approach is it let them do what happened here, invite with 3♠ then give the double so partner is in control. Bidding 4♥ on the second round would have been an overbid imho, but that would have been better than this 3♥/4♥ approach.

Back to the two heart overcall for a moment. Here is a rule of thumb...two level overcalls show good hands or good suits (or both). This is neither. When you get the urge to make a 2/1 decide what you are hoping to do. Here, opposite a passed hand, are you hoping to outbid them? No. Are you hoping to get a heart lead? No. Are you hoping to let them know where all the defensive points lay if they buy the contract (2♥ will help them)? No. I see no upside for bidding 2♥, even at matchpoints.

I hate the combination of 3H and 4H most. If you bid 3H the first round you should pass 3S. Personally I'd have bid 4H the first round.

I don't approve of the 2H call but I must admit to a sneaking bit of matchpoint sympathy for it. On a good day the auction would have gone 1S-2H-2S-4H-4S and a good score generated.

As I was North, I can 100% confirm the latter. However, since hardly anybody else in this field (open pairs German championship) could defend either, this certainly didn't affect my bidding.

Thanks for the comments all. Next time I will raise and shut up.

I have no problem with 3♥, 2 and 4♥ are just too much for me.
Even though I think the worst bid is 4♥, you told your story, I don't have to hear it again.

Can you blame North for being seduced (yes, I saw the swoon) into believing South's 2H overcall couldn't possibly be the actual hand? We often hear people determining hands that pard could (should) have for their actions.

Final verdict....North is gullible and should find a better pard, South is guilty as sin for all bad results that may occur.

Perhaps South wanted to bid 3H as a pre-empt and then chickened out?...lol

Hi,

I dont like 2H, but I find the 3H bid, followed by
the 4H bid more disgusting.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: The bidding by the oppoenents is not consisitent as well,
but maybe they do not play maximum doubles, which would
explain the auction.
With kind regards

4H is horrible. I can live with 2H. It's not a good overcall, but it's not that horrible as many may think. It may kill opps' minor suit fits and you may get actually more tricks from this hand than some better looking 14 HCP hands like SJxx HAQxxx DKx CKJx, this hand is a big sucker when partner is very broken, only one trick, HA, is probably guaranteed, if you don't revoke, but still people just overcall 2H with them because if you don't, partner may have a serious balancing problem. Change the SQ to HQ, I wouldn't give it a second thought to overcall 2H here, and now, it's rather bad, but not horrible. And 4H is just a no win bid unless against very passive opps or opps you know for sure that won't double you, even in that case, it still can be bad because sometimes both 3H and 3S may not be makable.
