2 likely 8-card major suit fits with both suits possibly splitting 4-1 or worse. (Altho when I chose to double they invariably were wildly overbidding and both have 3-2's the majors... ....).

The 5 level is for the opps, I have some defense against diamonds (2 cashing aces I hope) and an expected ruff or 2 by pard after starting with the H ace. Pard has at least 6 spades to the KQJ and some clubs so I will put the X on the table and see if pard pulls to 5 S (or even 5H on a stranger than usual day)

I ask because I was given some quite strident advice regarding this hand by our teammates, espousing a view with which I whole-heartedly disagree.

I bid 5H with confidence and opps may buy insurance with 6D, hehe. Normally, you go down in 5H and 5D also down one, but you still want to bid here because of the psychological effects. Also, once a blue moon, both games can be made.

I would definitely take the ♣ hook: I would lay a lot of money that the finesse was working: who leads from xxxx or xxxxx on this auction, and there is no way that leader has a stiff. Leader was worried that the ♦ might not cash.

So, while I did not and never would call Roland insane (for his double or anything other than his deluded claim to a certain small Artic island.... ooops, I forgot we have a truce on that), I would like to have the imps I deserve for my 5♠ bid

This is where I am forced to disagree. I have realized that for each king which turns out to be onside, the odds of making 5H/S improve, but then so does the penalty in 5♦X.

Further, I'm sure that at t-1, it would be a rare person who assumes all the kings are onside. So if I have guess which 2 of 3 to to place with the overcaller, I'm going to go with the club and the spade and hope for a favourable trump split.

Incidentally, my Inquiry ;-) was only whether you (or anyone else) prefer I use your nic having never met you formally. Good to know :-)

This is the best hand Lawrence recommends for NV 3S bid on this auction type.

That leaves you with the option of 2s and rebidding or 4s, your choice.

Double or 5♠. I am not sure.
It pretty much depends all on if pd has ♠ Ace or all other honors without the ace. He would bid the same with KQJXXXXX as with AKXXXXX.
I think he has first, because I hope with second one he would take it a little bit easier, since he has defensive value.
So I will have to bid 5♠.
