Pass, not even a close decison, even in 2/1 with fairly heavy openers, never mind opposite some of today's openings. Only some of the losses come when the bid goes wrong. Others come in missed games and wrong competetive bidding decisons when you respond 1 with a decent 6-count and partner fears you have this hand.

By the way, I seldom have gotten a horible result passing poor 7 counts and an occasional really ugly 8 count playing Precison, and those I have gotten have been compensated by some juicy penalties when they balance and get nailed.

Kokish, ACBL Bulletin Sept 2005, p. 55

...."but would never pass 1H or 1S with support or shortness, I might respond 1S to 1H with a terrible hand, normally with at least four spades. I would never pass with an Ace or an honor in partner's suit."

BTW playing Mexican 2D removes balanced 18-19 and many semi-balanced 18-19 hands out of opening one bids.

I think one level bids can apply a lot of pressure on opps. 1h=p=1s

This is Kokish's style but it's certainly not for everyone. I also like to respond this way (obviously). It is more important you and your partner are both on the same wavelength about these kind of style issues than what your style actually is.

I have thought about this question some more and have changed my mind. I would respond 1S over 1m with the given hand but pass over 1H.

I also came to the conclusion that bidding 1S is safer when playing Riton 2C or similar (like Gazilli).
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

A clear cut pass for me, too. I hate it when my partners pass forcing bids (such as jump shifts, reverses etc. because "I responded too light") and I am not going to be able to bite the bullet and pass pard's very possible J/S after my response.

There do seem to be two minds on this problem, and I am sure they all win on their day. For me, it is a partnership issue and unless I had the explicit agreement that J/Ss by opener were not forcing (and I am not sure I want to play that system) I will not respond with a subminimum hand. My minimum for a one-over-one response is an Ace and a semi-fit for pard's suit.

Could proponents of responding on (almost) anything suggest bidding tools to control action if opener has a decent hand. If opposite example hand that started this discussion opener has balanced 18 2533 2nt would not be pretty.

As far as I understand in WJ odwratka can handle this. Might some Gazilli like 2c relay work?

I think very friendly doesn't make justice to the lay out if you really made 11.

Absolutely.

In gazilli, opener rebids 2C an many different kinds of hands (including strong balanced hands in most versions). Responder bids 2D with most hands, but can bid 2H or 2S with crap. Opener will usually pass this. Had I responded 1S over 1H (which I decided I would not) then I would rebid 2S over 2C and we would usually be in a playable spot (and, if opener has a strong balanced hand, likely a better spot than 1H).

Playing inquiry2over1 the chance that you will survive is even larger:

A jump shift shows a non-forcing 5-5: easy pass.

A 3H rebid shows a very good heart suit: easy pass.

2NT is strong and shows 4-card spade support: sign off in 3S (unless opener bids game over that, in that case you should have some play).

2C is strong and artificial (Riton 2C): sign off in 2S. Opener will only continue with a very strong hand.

2S, 2H and 2D can easily be passed.

The downside to bidding really is very small in this system.

Correct you would play 2spades with that hand
2d=2h=2s=pass note you play it from the strong hand. Of course you can come up with example hands that work out worse.

After 1C-1S it goes similarly in inquiry2over1. Now the 2D rebid is forcing and artificial and may include strong balanced hands. Again, we rebid 2S to show a bad hand and partner passes with most of those.

Higher rebids by opener show support: 2NT shows 4 spades and 17+ support points. 3C shows 6+ clubs and 3 spades with a good hand. All these bids we can survive.

These are not standard methods btw.

Ok, the player who held this hand passed, and tabled dummy with the words "Probably it's one of those hands where we just about make 1 and the other table is cruising in 6." His partner supported this analysis: "Well, 7 are on a finesse." as declarer held the big two-suiter of the other thread:
Scoring: IMP

It wasn't as bad as that, they made 3 in 1 as some of the posters here would have done, and the finesse for 7 wasn't on. So only -15 IMPs.

Of course one hand proves nothing, but obviously if you don't respond very light, 1 with this two-suiter is more dangerous than usual, as you have 19 hcp and you have the majors. (With spade shortness, RHO will often not choose to balance I think.)

lol, nice. Actually I bet there is a correlation between 2C openers on the 2 suiter and passers on this hand. It does have some effect.

The world has not seen the light.... Perhaps they never will...

BTW, yet another reason for misiry, you don't have to keep auctions open if you don't feel like it. Or you can bid hoping to improve the contract (2 will not be an improvement) as jump shifts are not forcing, and their is multiple ways to stay out of 4 on almost all hands as opener has two game tries BELOW 3 with fit, and you can reject them both sequentially. But then, you pointed this out above somewhere....
