Yeah, well against that bidding I wouldn't lead the A of diamonds either. The AK weren't in the same hand, and North had supposedly promised first round control of diamonds by bidding 5NT, GSF.

I doubt whether GIB plays a GSF that can show the ♠A. In any case, the description of the bid does not indicate this is a GSF. I also have no idea how 6♠ was interpreted, but based on the description, I see no reason why there was a 7♠ bid.
I also don't know how the semi-psychic 2NT opener affected the auction. In a GIB game, I would just lead the ♦A on the assumption that a) North will have a running side suit, b) somebody made a misbid, c) there will be 13 tricks available when declarer get the lead. Supposedly in the latest release, if the contract was 7NT, the 100% lead would be ♦A.

5NT should be pick a slam. GSF makes no sense as GIB holds two of the top three ♠ honors. So I believe that GIB did intend it as pick a slam - obviously nonsense though that is with the actual hand. And I see no reason why the opening leader holding the DA did not attempt to cash it.
