You receive a 3 lead, how do you plan the play?

Also, he rates to not have a heart void when he leads the 3.

Hanoi, don't get me wrong but when/if you give a low level play problem i think u need to give us more than just the lead. We are not playing 7 NT. Do u want us to write every possible situation here ? Then i have to sit down nd write

-RHO took with Q and played back
-RHO took with Q and played back
-RHO took with Q and played back
....
....

And then i have to write all of them with when he takes first with A. And then we are going to be stucked at trick 3 or 4 again.

Imo if u are going to post a play or defense problem at low levels, either you need to prepare readers for the outcome of their early likely choices or you shd let the play advance for couple tricks first and ask what u really wanna ask.

Otherwise i will say " i play J" and wait for u to respond what they do, and it will go back and forth. You dont want us to make a plan without knowing what happened at trick 1 do you ? You know i usually like the topics u bring up, i thought it will be easier for everyone if we skip the paperwork for low level contracts :)

I'm going to play the club jack. The main plan is to later on play a heart to the ten. Expecting to make 7 tricks by means of

1-2 spades (RHO is virtually certain to have Hx of spades)
3 hearts
2 diamonds
1-2 clubs

while hoping no to lose more than

2 spades
2 hearts
0 diamonds
2 clubs

It doesn't add up. You are trying to establish 3 tricks by giving away voluntarily 2 tricks, they will establish 3+2+2 before you do.

Yeah, exactly what happened at the table. The reason I posted the problem was to see if playing the J is normal and whether trying to set up hearts is correct. Diamonds provided 5 tricks but I wasn't sure they were the way to go.

All right, so what do you do then?

After Q and J into I can switch gears into playing the K from hand or trying for 5 diamond tricks. Club jack at trick 1 certainly isn't a mistake.

I play an ace and then club to the table if they hold up I will just run T because it looks like E has a lot of hearts so probably J is there.
I can also play the spade back, maybe they will discard imprecisely on spades but that gives away my overtricks in case E has AJ.

This is much better line.

at both MP and IMPS I would rise with club K at trick one.
If it held I would lead heart T intending to finesse and
if it is covered by the J I will duck.

WHY rise at trick 1 you ask?

Tempo and the bidding.

lho could have bid either 2c (rather than pass) or bid
michaels over 1h. Having failed to do either of these
it seems safe to rule out a hand similar to
KJxxx A AQxxx xx heck with KJxxx x AQxxx xx I probably
would have bid 2c vs passing 1n

that seems to leave us with lho having a hand similar to
KJxxx A Qxxxx xx or KJxxx x Axxxx xx

hard for me to picture lho choosing to lead from Qxxxx
when the spade suit almost assuedly is better and at least
as long as the clubs so I rise with the K because I think
Axxxx is a ton more likely than Qxxxx.
