Instant Tournaments

Instant Tournament is a new take on bridge tournaments - play a tournament anytime and earn masterpoints without waiting for partners or opponents! Choose to play in an ACBL or BBO game, and choose your favorite scoring, MP or IMP. Instant Tournaments combine the best of a tournament and a single player game. When you start an Instant Tournament, you will be dealt deals from a past tournament you have not played before, and have your scores compared against 14 players in those tourneys. If you do well, you receive BBO Points, as well as ACBL masterpoints if you have chosen an ACBL Instant tournament.

BBO Instant Tournaments

BBO Instant Tournaments award BBO Points and cost 33 cents to play.

When you are logged into BBO, look at the Featured Areas.

Click the Instant Tournaments link and then check the BBO option, and choose your scoring preferences by checking the circle next to either IMPs or Matchpoints. When you are ready, click "Play Now!"

Time Limitations

One advantage of an Instant Tournament is that you can take as much time as you want to complete the 30 minute game. This is very useful when you are not sure if you have a block time available for bridge or when you know for sure you will be interrupted, e.g. when you are watching kids.

Each tournament lasts for 30 minutes, but you can decide which 30 minutes to use. If you are interrupted during the game and need more time, you can log off, and then log back on to be able to resume the tournament without losing the entry fee. The clock freezes when you log out of BBO and resumes when you return. Upon your return, you are automatically reseated in the game.

If there is no bid or play for the first two minutes, the game is canceled and refunded. This is to protect players in situations when the game doesn't start for various technical reasons (for instance, some relevant server is unavailable).

If the player is disconnected and there is no bid or play for 90 minutes, the game is canceled but not refunded.

If the player is present and there is no bid or play for 30 minutes, the game is canceled but not refunded.

If the player withdraws from the game voluntarily, there is no refund.

Scoring and Completion Requirements

This game is Best Hand - your hand will always contain at least the same HCP as the next highest HCP hand. It is also Human Declare - when North wins the contract, South (you!) will declare instead.

Each tournament is eight boards long and you must complete all eight boards to be included on the leaderboards. Leaving or withdrawing from the tournament in the middle of the game will count against your Tournament Completion Rate (TCR).

Want to try this game out? You can play a Sample Instant Tournament at no cost. This sample changes once a week, on Fridays, and you can replay the sample game.

ACBL Instant Tournaments

ACBL Instant Tournaments award ACBL masterpoints and BBO Points. You can play up to two ACBL Instant Tournaments an hour. The cost is $1 BB$ to play.

When you are logged into BBO, look at the Featured Areas.

Click either the Instant Tournaments link and then check the ACBL option, and choose your scoring preferences by checking the circle next to either IMPs or Matchpoints. When you are ready, click "Play Now!"

Or click ACBL World and click the yellow Instant Tournament link in the horizontal row of links below the list of Pending ACBL tournaments.

Either link takes you to the registration box.

Each tournament is twelve boards long and you must complete all twelve boards to be included on the leaderboards. Leaving or withdrawing from the tournament in the middle of the game will count against your Tournament Completion Rate (TCR). There is no time limit for the tournament. However, if you are idle for a long time, you will be disconnected from BBO and the game is forfeited.

About the robots

The robots used on BBO are called GIB (Ginsberg's Intelligent Bridgeplayer). GIB is widely considered to be one of the best computer bridge programs ever created. It is occasionally capable of brilliance. It is also occasionally capable of some really poor bids and plays (just like all human players).

Some players may find it frustrating if a particular robot partner plays especially poorly (or if a particular robot opponent plays especially well), on a given hand, but, these things will even themselves over time. We think that our robots plays at least as well as the average BBO member. In simulations, our robots currently average around 55% in a duplicate tournament setting.

Sometimes the robot does something totally crazy (don't we all). If your GIB does something crazy, we want to know about it so we can see if it is fixable. However, we cannot, under any circumstances, offer a refund.

The GIBs used on BBO play a relatively simple and natural 2/1 bidding system. You can find out the meaning of any bid by clicking on that bid as it appears in the bidding diagram. Furthermore, when it is your turn to bid, moving your mouse over the buttons for the various possible bids will cause an explanation of the bid you are considering (as your GIB partner will understand it), to be displayed. These explanations can be somewhat cryptic, but reading them carefully before you bid will help you to avoid misunderstandings with your GIB partner.

There are two links to the robot convention card available.

Under the Robot World link in Featured Areas.

Under the BBO World link in Features Areas.
